I know this may have been beat to death but, always a but, I’ve heard that you can run a 10” wheel on the rear of a 73 Z28.

Well a 10 inch tire is somewhat a 255 width tire.
Yes, it can be run but your handling may be better with a 245, which is approximately 9.6 inches.
The reason for this is when a 255 is mounted on a 7 inch wheel, it gets rounded on top so the actual road contact patch is less quality that that of a 245. In addition, the sidewalls bulge and increase latertial time movement, which also equates to poor.handling.

Think of it this way, what do you think when you see a woman with her muffin top showing, well that's how your tires will handles.

So if you’re running an aftermarket wheels, say 17 x 9’s, could you then run the 255’s okay ?

Yep, that horse is dead.....can you run 10" wide wheels/rims, yes, but without proper BS and most likely mods, you may have issues unless you you start raising the back, then things get off base quickly.

Look at the manufacturers tire charts, they give overall width and a rim width range and "as measured for best fit.

Example, a 275/40/17 tire, Nitto NT05/555-G2 are 10.12 overall width on a "as measured" 9" rim, the rim width range is 8.5(9.0)-10", same with the RT660, same size tire, but 10.4 o/a width, same specs.

Some tires measure narrow for their specs, some come in wider than advertised. Nitto is one company that runs narrow, Falken RT660 ride w i d e.
