I also have a 77 trans am 4 speed with a slightly modified 1971 400 Pontiac with #16 heads, and it doesn't seem that much more powerful than the 400 sbc I have. Although the Pontiac was built for top end.

I think stock vs stock in 1971 the torque specs of both motors were pretty much the same. They do have the same stroke. But the heads on my Pontiac are alot larger so they must give more horsepower

I have a mild 400sbc and 2.41 posi in my 79 Camaro and it works just fine. The torque provided by the 400 makes up for the 2.41, and I get almost 20mpg cruising the highways at 60mph(2000rpm). If I put my foot down, the car really moves, especially in 3rd gear. I have a stock th350, but I can't give engine specs because the OG I bought it from couldn't remember them. He said it was 3/4 race cam and the heads were just rebuilt, I can't remember the casting number but I believe them to be the X version of some lower ci heads. So I have higher compression than stock(required 93 octane), but I run out of steam at 4000rpm, about 120mph. Otherwise the combination is great for a daily driver, I press the throttle with my toe, not my foot, because of the huge amount of torque at the bottom end. If I put my foot down on a rainy day, I can spin tires until third gear.
I bought my car 19 years ago, with a basic 350, but I got the 400 about ten years ago. Still running the th350 that came with it after 19 years of daily driver use. You should be fine, the 400sbc with all of the lowend torque really woke up my 2.41 gear car.
