Any flat stone that you would use to sharpen a knife will work.

I never recommend using a spacer. I've had to fix several rear ends because of problems that came from using a spacer. If you replace the differential then I recommend the Eaton Posi or Eaton Truetrac.
.

I came across an Eaton carrier (19557-010) yesterday. Luckily my cousin has a new one that he mistakenly ordered for a 69 Camaro over 15 years ago. It was sitting in the original box in his attic at his transmission shop. We are going to agree on a price after I test fit it. I just ordered Timken bearings for it, and they should arrive tomorrow. I am going to shoot to install it either Thursday or Saturday.

Just be cautious of the price. A new Eaton or Yukon differential is better with the upgrade to 30 spline axles.

Did you mark the carrier caps when removing them the first time? If not, there is a chance you mixed them from left to right. Don't know for sure if this could cause your initial problem (binding), but would address it if you again run into it with the new carrier.

This brings up something that I always tell people. Never mark the left cap with a punch. Only mark the right cap. The left cap carries most of the load because the ring gear is on that side. The pinion is always trying to push the differential out the back of the housing, and the left cap is under a high amount of stress. If you put a punch mark in the left cap it makes it weaker and can cause it to break. You only need to mark one cap, so mark the right one, not the left.

I fought and fought this on a 77 Stepside lowrider I built years ago, it was my boat puller with a factory 454 turbo 400.... My problem was more finding the right gears, rebuild items AND a Posi unit so I could pull the boat out of a slippery ramp.... I purchased a 9" ford with 31 spline axles from Dutchman that was a bolt in unit for my truck, and never looked back ..... Now if I had a really nice stock Z28, I can't say I would do this, but it was a GREAT add to my truck......

I personally marked mine with paint.

I took pictures before removing the old gear set. It appears there was some paint in the caps, so I will reassemble the same way.

What should I torque the pinion nut to during initial assembly? If I torque it over 85lbs, I cannot move the pinion by hand.
