and no, i'm not taking it off ! i've already read all the +'s and -'s of having a gear drive...

Now how did you know that was what we were going to suggest ;)

Without sounding like a smart@$$,, if the noise apparently falls in the negative column,,, what is in the plus column????? Why is it you don't want to take it off?

.... i like the sound, but the B+M aluminum cover that the idler gear is mounted on "amplify's" the sound... I'll try putting some neoprene rubber between the cover and the back of the water pump...

IF you have one of those old '80's Milodon / B & M sand cast cover with the mounted idler, the way too "quiet it down" is time consuming and will have some cost involved.

The first thing that needs to be done is to take out the excess play in the idler gear. You will need to have a bushing machined to take up the slack and get a bronze washer to be sandwiched between the idler gear and the cover.

The next thing is to replace the Torrington bearing behind the cam gear with a Cloyes Bronze thrust ring and use a nylon cam button instead of the bearing.

The final thing is to get a piece of DynaMat and affix it to the front of the cover behind the water pump.

Most of the volume of noise is generated from the looseness of the components and vibration of the cover.

The sound will be slightly "muffled" and not as loud but will still be high pitched and less hollow. It won't sound like a Pete Jackson or Summers Brothers but it will be less annoying.
