Update, 4 October 2011, Hinges

My God, is it October already? I am still at least 2-3 weeks
away from starting the car.

I have had a cold or something the last two weeks...finally
got out there this afternoon to start working on the car again.

And I had several problems! Drat!

The first one has to do with the door hinges. The ones with the latch
and springs needed lube, so I did it without reading the Fisher Body
Manual. And I screwed up. No problem, clean up the grease, right?

Red stuff must go!

The right door is on, so it was easy to move the hinge to clean it up.
The drivers side door is NOT on, so I used a screwdriver to open the
hinge to clean it. I was SO focused on cleaning, I screwed up...

Now, how am I gonna fix this? I suspect a new hinge pin is in order!

Update, 4 October 2011, Door Handles

Well, I already had a hinge pin disappointment...what else?

I started to put the door handle back in on the passenger door.

Z28_04_Oct_2011_68.jpg

It would not go through the square opening for its' hinge!
I know they are only $10 handles, but I'm not cutting the door
so the handle hinge will go through! Look at the new one on
the left, and the original one on the right:

Look at the difference in hinge width:

And still look at the width of the handle difference:

I guess I need some of those GM original or OEM handles to make this work!

WOW, you really got unfortunate the last couple days.
But your misfortune is my luck - Now I know that I shouldn't lube my door hinges there.

Can you tell us which door handles these NON fitting are? So none of us buys them.
I just spent some time researching...it seems the new handles are the only show in town! NPD sells some GM replacement ones for over $100 but they are the same length as the new ones I have. Apparently, no one sells a new proper door handle replacement for a 1970!

I guess if I want to continue, I need to modify the new handle (not my door) or have my original handles re-plated!
