Over the past few months doubts have arisen over the Kurust product I used when I stripped the interior and worked on the floor. Many have said how these "miracle" rust killers only hinder the growth of the corrosion, and albeit not that well either.

With this in mind, and wishing to preserve the original steel I removed the silver Hammerite back to bare steel. Thankfully new rust hadn't formed but just to be safe the floor was mechanically abraded and attacked with citric acid gel..

...the steel might be pitted, but its clean and free from corrosion.

I had very good floors in mine 1979 Z-28 RS Camaro with "T" topsI took care of any issues I had .Its a loaded Z so I had the sound deadening package in it. And since I live in the Greater Seattle area.I used roll on bed liner and Dyno Mat.as well.

I'm doing my best to un-deaden the sound. Planning to use U-Pol s Raptor on the underside soon enough. Which bed liner do you use and did it deaden the interior acoustics?

The black paint on bed liner. Its been so long I forgot the brand. A long with scrap and undercoat the whole underbody of the car. spray on undercoating. Like I said before I live near the area between Seattle Washington and Tacoma,Washington.. Thats in Puget Sound body of saltwater. I believe its the around the same latitude. Similar rainy weather. I am a Marine Corps Veteran and have spent time aboard ship. They taught us all about the wonders of rust. And how to take care of it. My Camaro has a 500 HP engine with headers ,2 1/2 exhaust .Flowmaster 3 chamber exhaust .That can get a "little loud at times.Good luck on your project.

Thanks :)

I'm learning about the "wonders" of rust too! Since the option of sand or media blasting isn't possible it's citric acid gel and mechanical abrasion all the way. It does work, but what a time consuming effort, I'm glad its coming to an end now. I think the arches I'll use Raptor on but as for the rest of the underside, I'm not entirely sure what I'll coat the epoxy mastic with.

I know it takes a while .But it should pay off in the long run.Considering the amount of rust repair you had to do. There are those who would of given up early in your type of project .So continued good luck on your project.

Thank you for the encouraging words :) . You're right it has been a slog, next time round (and there will be a next time :) ) a majority of the gear will be sand blasted (far quicker!!)

Well once you get all paint and body is done ,Then you can start to add the "toys" to the car. The engine the brakes ,the suspension etc. And the way the car looks too.You can go from a what I call a "bowtie "car to a car similar to mine,Customizing is to your own taste is the fun part of the build,It all depends on your choices, your pocket book. And you fabrication skills. And you seem to have those to do what you have done in your garage,Have fun ,It will be interesting to see what you come up with.

Tell me more about the acid gel - what do use, where do you get it from and how do you use it?

Ok, so the ready made stuff is made by Bilt Hamber http://www.bilthamber.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=deox+gel it works VERY well, although several applications are required along with mechanical abrasion, but I can guarantee it will take out the corrosion in the pits if you go at it long enough.

..however, I like to save a buck or two and it was said the (via the http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/ ) that one could make their own for a fraction of the cost. This I did, use wallpaper paste with citric acid susupended in it. It does work, and just as GOOD as the Deox Gel! I've been using my own homebrewed citric acid gel for months now and it does clean the steel wonderfully. And it sticks to vertical surfaces and the underside the floor pan!

Wash it off with soapy water between 12-24 hours (otherwise it'll dry out and adhere) rinse, dry and then abrade. Keep on doing this until the steel is clean, normally 2-5 applications needed.
