Hi, I purchased a GM EGR that was supposed to be for a 73-79 SBC. I did not have the cylinder thingy on the bottom. I will see if I have the old one but I was pretty sure it had it on there. The old one meaning from one of my other Z's. This is an image I pulled from another site for the EGR. This one is from a parts place. Mine I believe is a GM part.

Is it required?

A genuine GM part is application-specific. Might fit several model years, though, as emissions standards kind of got a bit easier to do, seems like, in some model years.

NO GM-supplied part will need "calibration washers" to work! That is the sign of an aftermarket, universal-fit part. Which can be the difference between an OEM NOS part and a ACDelco aftermarket part?

If you push that part up, it pushes the diaphragm up in the housing. Let it return and the diaphragm comes back down. Without it, I would consider the EGR as non-functional. Might as well just put a block off plate on your intake unless you want it there for looks.
