Just wondering how fast anyone has run a 8.5 10 bolt without breaking it. I mean I am looking for something that will hold up for the whole season. I currently have 8.5 in my 79Z and are looking to go into the mid 11s next year and 10s the following. Can I expect things to hold up? |

It depends on what you have internally. I have a 10-bolt and plan on seeing 9's. I have all Moser internals with 33 spline axles. |

I am looking at a moser spool, street gears, and stock axles. This would be the least I would do..I would eventually upgrade the axles. |

If you are installing a spool why not replace the axles at the same time? I would go a little bigger then what you think you will need. Then you should never have to deal with any problems. |

Do You have the tubes welded to the center section? If not, Do it! This is the first weak link in these rears. I broke mine after about a dozen 12 second passes. |

Weld the tubes up & you should be good to go... My stock 10-bolt went 10.50 @ 125 on a 200HP of N20 with my 383 SBC...... I never had a problem with ther diff, but i did take it apart & install some 33 spline Moser axles & spool..... If you plan on going that fast, it may be a good investment come winter time.... |

In case it hasn't been said already, WELD THE AXLE TUBES!!I twisted my drivers side tube when I was still running 14 seconds but it was probably some of the worst factory plug welds I had ever seen. I'm planning on Mosler axles this winter too but the rest of the diff should be fine for my target of 11.49. The axle upgrade is more for peace of mind than anything else. |

Aftermarket axles and axle retention (c-clip eliminator kit) mandatory on any car running 10.99 or quicker and ANY CAR RUNNING A SPOOL, REGUARDLESS OF ET per general reg 2:11 and to continue the echo,, ------------------ Weekend Grocery getter 12.3's through the mufflers on DOT's, in street trim |

I will also note here... If this car will EVER see ANY street use do not run a spool. Sure formula for broken stuff ------------------ |

Thanks guys..I will weld the tubes this year...I still have an Eaton posi that is ok so if I leave that I will stick with stock axles. How much did you guys pay for 33 spline axles for the 10 bolt? |
|
Mousehouse Veteran Member |
If I remember correctly they were under $400 for both with studs. |

The axles are the weak link in the 10 and 12 bolt rears. even if you only get the Moser stock style replacement axles they are quite a bit stronger than the factory axles. search the archives we have gone over this several times in the past. manual trans cars are generally harder on driveline parts (like axles) with the right parts the 8.5" 10 bolt will live in a 7 second car maybe even a 6 second ride :'). 10:13's with a stock 373 posi rear in my 75. Not welded, completely stock. 396 with tunnel ram and dual 250 plates, 350 trans. It made probably 20 10 second passes. The track I went to did no tech inspection except a helmet. ------------------ |

I wouldn't run one past the nines. Welding the tubes and doing all the other tricks doesn't do anything for the problem of them bending. 20 passes on a stock 10 bolt in the tens? What was your 60' and MPH? |

I am going to weld the tubes and we will see where my funds go from there. Would like to go with the spool and axles but not sure of funds as of yet. I am probably going to be in the 11.50 range. |
