I can say from personal experience that any increase in power brought the Z28 chassis into its own. Most TA owners in those days thought of the Camaro chassis as inferior, when in fact the F-41/Z28 group only needed power to show its stuff. My 77.5 with a balanced power increase would chew up TAs on any road, and in fact we used to go hunting them just for that reason. The Camaro would drift on all four tires in a perfectly controllable fashion. The slight understeer compared to the TA completely disappeared with the addition of power. The TA was mainly purchased by disco posers here in SoCal, and the sound of a new Z28 with a solid lifter twelve to one engine would drive them nuts in their impotence.
The TA was a nice car, but once the tool boxes came out the lighter and more nimble Camaro was the real american supercar of the late seventies. Most people were afraid to modify them very much, so you see a lot of magazine copy derailing the Camaro in favor of the TA.

Hunting TAs and Vettes was great sport in those days. We would roll up from behind a TA with decreasing speed, downshifting, timing it just right to knock third as we rolled up with the engine next to the TA driver's ear. The poor TA driver would be alarmed at the sound of a potent engine, but would almost always go anyway, because of faith in the myth of TA invinciblilty. They would yank their T-350 into second, but with that 430 inch ZL-1 already at four grand in third, the stab-off was no contest. The code 13 TA killer would leap forward and come on the cam at the same time, and leave the TA not only beaten, but thoroughly humilitated.
Often we would catch one on a country road. The fun would start with precise timing again... we would come up behind a lumbering TA about to exit a corner, and we would be in a drift with the rat singing on the down-to-third-or-second gear overrun. Four laners were the best, because we could pass the TA in a 4-wheel drift easily and leave the TA driver slack-jawed at the awesome display of potent automotive power.

I wasn't kidding when I posted earlier that my silver 77.5 was the most satisfying car I've ever owned.

Ever seen a power window-war? We were sitting at a light on Pacific Coast Highway next to a 930 Porsche one afternoon, and the girl in the pass side of the German car rolled her window down to admire the 1200 rpm idle Camaro. The boyfriend got mad and rolled her window up. She got mad and rolled it back down. He put it back up. They started staring at each other, then the driver glared at me and smirked, but you can guess the rest... when the light turned green we laid down a crisp and clean tach run through all four, leaving the shocked Panzerkapitan to his own domestic problems.

haw haw haw

I guess after all these years I still have the same attitude that my half-year Camaro enjoyed so much, back in the dark days of the mid-smog era.

I loved my bumper-car.

That site doesn't let you tell the facts, just click little boxes.

The car is stock all right, right down to the all-GM ZL-1.

Does anyone still have the very light grey instrument cluster panel in their 77.5 ?

Aero - nice car! Do you have any pics of the engine?

My instrument cluster panel is brown; part of some interior trim option package near as I know.

Mr. DirtReynolds,

Thanks a lot. I value everyones opinions here.....That car is a real deal 77 Z28 that got taken apart, stripped, rebuilt, painted and put back together. The hood is a 78 because it was the straightest one I could find. And I tossed the front grill trim, it was too rough to re-use. I still have the original seats BTW. I took the engine out and built a 383 from a late 1997 motor.>>>>>>>>>>>>Ken

Had some excitement here fri. I had a whopper of an electrical fire in my beast! After 30 mile tow (thx AAA) found that the stereo guys had wired the power boost anten. without a fuse! I've got a 12 in segment of fused wire for a trophy. I was ready to fuse that #$% ears together the HARD way! Begs the Q... how have you all solved the "no antenna" prob. Mine does not have the wire in the wind shield.

Well, I did manage to use the rear window defroster wires as a scanner antenna.
Very covert, works as well as a regular one, and much better (of course) than the rubber job that comes with the unit. Picks up 30-45 MHz quite well. That's a useful band out here.

I was very surprized when I hooked up my cd player to the windshield antenna. I didn't think it'd work well, but it picks up better than any vehicle I've ever had. My 79 didn't work out as well 15 years ago. I don't know what the difference is except on this car I used an antenna booster from Radio Shack. And yes, I did use a fuse. On the other one I used Antenna Craft from the local stereo shop.

I just don't want to replace the windshield just yet. I still have to get around to the door glass. I got a bad case of electric window racing stripes BTW how common was it to put the all electric option in this critter? Still looking for the lock actuators for the power locks.

I have an original "Car & Driver" magazine with a white 77 Z on the cover and a multi page spread on the returning 77 Z.
The picture on the article is a 2 page spread with the car in the background with all the special parts laid out beside it.

I went to the dealership with my dad to pick up our new 77 Z. I was 17 and more than happy to take the wheel whenever I could.
It was white with tri color orange yellow and red I think striping. Black LT (deluxe) vinyl interior, power windows, door locks, tinted glass, 8 track I think if I remember correctly. I will always remember that car, it was awesome.

Were those "orange cars" a Reddish-orange?
If so I know where a decent one lurks.
Whats a realistic price for a solid car needing a resto??? Maybe I'll git me a 77 yet!

Acording to this site's stats. only about 1/3 of the production run got the four speed. That should be about 500. I know. I have one. Borg-warner st-10 4 spd. Boy does it have a short throw and close side to side. Normaly I could just put my hand on the shifter and tell what gear. Not in this critter. I found out the hard way that I could get out of the hole in 3rd gear (oops). Not to mention the embaressment of two mech. AND me who could not figure out how to put the !@#@#^ in reverse the first time I'm qualified for everthing from a motorcyle to a ducenhalf and even I got buffaloed. Had to crawl back to old owner to reviel the mysery. I've never seen this pattern before.

Mine came with a 4-speed originally also. And the previous owner of my '77 also had another '77 (brown) many years ago, it too with a 4-speed.

According to this webpage, there were 5,114 1977 Z/28's built with the 4-speed.

The Inland shifter that came with my car used to fall off the side of the trans on a regular basis. I even ground a 9/16 wrench thinner to make the roadside repair easier.
Evenutally just stuck a Hurst in.
I don't know why that was a big deal. The Inland shifter in my '80 soldiers on without a complaint. Whenever I have the dough for a Comp Plus, I spend it on other things.
