I guess you could order just about anything. But how many were really special ordered anyway from the factory in such a short model year?? I think any seats like that got in there AFTER it was delivered to the dealer/customer.
Just my opinion, I was 17 then and looked at a lot of these cars. thanks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ken

Kenny, first of all, I don't mean to say things to put anyone on the defensive, so I'm sorry if that's how I came across. I'm not here to insult anyone else, we're all here to learn from each other.

Yes, the Sport Coupe and LT each had their own optional cloth interiors, and they looked distinctly different. And though the Z28 was a mid-year offering (Feb.), there were still 6 plus months where you could special order one any way you wanted to, including with the optional (on the Z28 only) LT cloth interior, if you so desired. And I am here to tell you that people DID just that, because I've seen them with my own eyes going all the way back to the late '70s (and I doubt so many people went to the trouble and expense of changing those seats over back then).

I'll finish this later, I was just called away.

See with interiors I think you could go nuts trying to figure it out, ie: My sister had a 76 and later a 77 Type LT that had the seats we are talking about...and ALSO had a different type of upper door panel. Not a one piece panel, they happened in 78..but part vinyl, part cloth on the upper.

The pics of the "unmolested" copper colored Z28 show a cloth seat in there alright, along with power windows. But in 77 and 78 with the power window block off hole cap thing had the same style Z28 insert emblem that is on the wheel caps. The photo shows the ones in the car as having the standard Camaro crest emblem on them.

The other thing that makes you wonder is you see a lot of these two tone interior combinations these 75-77 years. Then you also see alot of solid one color ones too. I have heard it explained many ways, but I still wonder about it.

With parts as cheap, plentiful and interchangable for so many years with these cars it's hard to tell...Heck...I can remember guys at Super Chevy Sunday Swap Meet selling whole, complete pristine Camaro interiors for $250. And there I think lies a big part of the problem when trying to sort out what's what????>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ken

That's what we're trying to find oot here... I can tell you that I personally saw cars with the exact same interior and exterior colors, yet one will have a tan console and the other a black one: see the interior photo provided by Dan!

Dan, thanks for the pics, by the way. And did anyone notice in Dan's pics that this unmolested '77 Z has bright rain drip moldongs on the edge of the roof, even though the rest of the chrome trim was blacked out? How many '77 Zs have you seen with that option?!!! Also, that car has the original Steelgard tires on it!

Kenny, I saw a number of '77 Zs back when they were new or fairly new, that had the LT interiors as an option. They weren't swapped in back then, it was too expensive back then, and not really worth doing.

I also saw back then more than one Z28 with power windows that had the plain Camaro "block off" instead of the Z28 emblem. Who knows why, but those cars again were new or fairly new, and that's just the way they were built. Funny things happen in an assembly plant!

By the way, that burnt copper everyone keeps talking about was actually called Orange Mettalic! And the upper door panels on an LT interior (whether cloth or vinyl) had an armrest with a built in pull handle, very much different than a base Sport Coupe door panel (either cloth or vinyl).

As for Dan's unmolested interior, while it does have cloth seats, they don't match the pattern or style of the cloth LT seats in the '77 Camaro brochure, and his photo also has the base Sport Coupe upper door panel, not the LT....

This gets less and less clear all the time, doesn't it? Another point: with all of the factory original literature and catalogs, and all the original 1977 magazine articles I have on the 1977 Z28, I have not seen anywhere a picture of a base Sport Coupe's optional cloth interior. They DID exist, the factory ordering info tells us that, but no where in any of the factory literature is there a single picture of one. So, is the interior in Dan's unmolested '77 Z28 pics the cloth LT seat (doesn't look to be, by the factory brochure photo!) or the optional Sport Coupe cloth seat? I need to check the build sheet or window sticker, I suppose!

This discussion is great! I have owned several camaros. My first car was a 76 sport coupe 6 cyl 3 speed manual. It was firethorn ext and firethorn interior with cloth seats and cloth door panels, like the 77 LT in the brochure. My 2nd car was a 78 Z28 white exterior with the gold and brown stripe package and a black interior. How about that color combo. Rich you said you have never seen a black interior with the gold and brown stripe package on a 77, and maybe they didnt make any, but my 78 definately had it, and it was 3 years old when I bought it.

Dan, I can't imagine they did things much different in '78 than they did in '77, so that combo kind of surprises me. Any photos of that car? Thanks.

Here again is the factory literature on exterior/interior color selection. It says there are only three recommended seat colors for the 1977 Z28; black, white, and buckskin (doesn't say you can't order any other color interior for that year though, it just doesn't have a recommended stripe color for any other choices).

I think I have a photo after I had the car repainted. I think you can tell it has the gold and brown emblem in the picture. I will have to hunt it up and post it later.
The reason I remember the gold/brown stripe package so well, is that I didn't like that stripe color and I preferred the red/orange that I had seen on other white 78's that I had seen. When I had the car repainted, I wanted to replace the stripe package with the red/orange color, but the dealer had quoted me and outrageous price for it at the time. I settled for changing the front and rear Z28 emblem to red/orange, and then I bought 4 of the fender decals that say camaro Z28 in red/orange. Two of them went on the car and I still have the other 2 in the original GM package.

For everyones information here, I contacted GM last fall about invoice information on a 77 Z28, and was told that they have all the invoices for cars built after 1/1/77. The email address was
gmma.research@gm.com
They need the VIN and your address, and they mail it out to you.

Since the '77 Z28 started production on Feb.1st, that means they have every '77 Z28 ever built? Didn't we cover this subject earlier on this thread, and they didn't have all of them?

Rich...No they don't. Jeff Betz tried to get one for his '77 Z and they didn't have it.

By the way that interior on that 13,000 mile car is exactly like mine, it's a base sport cloth interior.

Thanks Nick, that's what I thought on both counts!

Sorry for the duplicate information, I didn't take the time to read all 37 pages! The girl I talked to up there told me that they had information on every car built after Jan. 1, 1977. She could have been mistaken, or maybe they don't have it on EVERY car? The car I got information on was a late build, though.

Thanks for the heads up, Dan. I'll keep searching for other issues. I'm sure there was one.
