COPO I have been in contact with Rich M . I am not duplicating anything he is doing. I am not compiling any data. I was just curious how many 77 z owners were out there. I asked for Red Dawg's build sheet , because he mentioned he had it. I wanted to compare it to my own build sheet, and also to see what a Van Nuys California build sheet looks like compared to a Norwood Ohio build sheet. I havn't seen any other 77 Z's in my area in about 15 years. Dan

Congrads, if I still had mine today and if it needed an engine job, I'd want close to 400hp it it.

These engines were marked with a crayon on the driver's side valve cover. They were marked "28".

Aero80: I've exchanged emails with Jeff Betz regarding the crayon number on the valve cover, and he has informed me that it has to do with the final hot test, balancing, and timing setting of the engine, on the assembly line. My '77, which is all original with 25k miles, has a number 19 on the drivers side valve cover. By the way, it's great to see all the interest in the '77s. Makes me glad I've held on to mine over the years.

I'm pretty sure that these cars could have either of two diferent color dash panels.

What color is your instrument panel face? Most had a simulated "leather" color, didn't they? I think the other was a light gray. When you answer this, please note your vehicle's exterior and interior colors for reference, as well as if your car had cloth or vinyl seats.

Doing a little research for that potential article. Thanks. Jeff, can you shed any light on this as well? Was it dependant on your interior trim level? Thanks.

Rich M,

My '77 has the light gray colored face plate on the dash. The car is light red, paint code '75', with the standard black vinyl seats. The car is all original, with 25k miles on it. It still contains several grease pencil marks, and I have the build sheet for the car. If you have any questions regarding these cars for your resto, please let me know.

Hey folks, just a thought ..... just for sh*ts and giggles, how 'bout seeing if anyone has (or knows of) a '77 Z28 from the Van Nuys plant built AFTER mid June 1977 ?

The way to tell is simple; the VIN will tell you what plant the car was built in, by reading 1Q87L7L------. The week the car was built in will be a 3 digit code on the lower left corner of the cowl tag (ie; 05c will be the third week of May), and we'll be looking for a code of 06B, 06C, 06D, 06E, 07A, 07B, etc.

The latest code I ever saw on a Norwood car was 08A, by the way. That's the first week in August, well over a month after they crushed those 18 Z's over in Van Nuys!

Rich M,

After reading your posting, I went into the garage, uncoverd the car and checked the cowl tag. I new my car was a Van Nuys plant car, but never thought to check the production date. It's a 06D, which I guess is the last week of June 1977.

What a waste of a sports car when it's an automatic.

I'm throwing in the towel on my 77 Z28. I dont have the time to finish this car. I'm going to strip the car of its parts and give it to the bone yard. If anyone needs parts for this car let me know.

I bought a 77Z here a while back. Gonna restore with my son. It's a straight old car,set a while, but had rebuilt engine, edlebrock intake, runs pretty good. Very very little rust, just a couple of spots, even the rear valence is rustfree. Needs gonethrough of course but good starter car for my son to learn just whatis involved in restoring and taking care of a nice ride. (Father&son project) Am
buying some 77parts from Duece since we are close to each other. When we are done I'll show pictures of what a decent $600 Camaro turned into.

Fixin' a 77Z,78Z and a 80Z. I must be crazy!

I think I'm going to Camaros at Carlisle, as well as the huge spring event in a few weeks. Can't make the Mich. event however. It sounds nice though, I'll have to make a point of getting there some year.
