Are those front spoilers 3 piece, then? What is the axle code for a '77Z auto? CM=3.42 posi? Thanks. |

quote: Do you mean the code number that is on the axle, the build sheet, or where? I have some paperwork from Chevrolet for the 1977 Camaro, but it's the early set, not the later "revised for the Z28" set, and it lists codes of PT for the 2.56, PU for the 2.73, and PW for the 3.08 Nothing is listed for the 3.42 or 3.73, as they weren't available when these papers were released in Sept. 1976. ------------------------------------------- quote: Dan, I'm going to start researching codes, all kinds of codes.What kind of stuff went on a window sticker, what info should be where on a build sheet and what it is there for, sequential numbers, all kinds of codes. All of this is to help figure out more and more info on these cars, and share it with each other. Also for general interest to share, how common were varios options, what were some of the more unusual items, things like that. We need to build some sort of "data bank" of info on these cars, without compromising anyone's privacy. By the way,tallman, that is an incredible looking light blue '77Z! That's not supposed to be a factory painted combo though, is it? |

Yes the front spoiler is 3 piece. The corner pieces are plastic and the center bit feels like a hard rubber. |

Before I head of to work this morning, let me leave you with this little tidbit. Did you know that once Chevrolet decided to bring back a performance model to go after some of the Trans Am sales Pontiac was getting, their first thought wasn't to bring back the Z28 .......? Check this out (from Gary Witzengurg's out of print book "Camaro! From Challenger to Champion");

how do I reply with a quote? anyways. Rich, was that the brochure that customers could pick up from the rack and take home with them? No, this was the actual order guide pages the dealer had and they were also in the GM Office where I worked for GM Salaried people to borrow when they wanted to order a direct sale car with the discount. ------------------ [This message has been edited by COPO (edited February 08, 2004).] |

What are the rear axle codes (numbers on the housing) on the 77 Z28? Anybody? This site doesn't list the 77 codes for a Z28. |

quote: John, what is the code on the axle you have? Maybe other owners of automatic Z's can verify yours through their code number? How about you 4 speed owners, anyone get under their car and check their codes yet? Dan, thanks for the email! COPO, could you scan and e-mail those pages to me? Thanks. Tallman, do you remember which book that blue Z was in? Just curious.
Hey, what did you all think about that '77 Camaro "SS" proposal? Anyone interested in seeing two proposed hood decal designs for the '77 Z28 that were rejected? [This message has been edited by rich m (edited February 09, 2004).] |

I went and looked at a yellow '77Z yesterday. It's on autotrader online for 1950 obo in the Fort Worth area. It needs EVERYTHING! I think it's a real Z, though. Here's my take on it . . . Build month was June (I think), missing front spoiler. No decal on hood (replaced?), not factory air cleaner, no grill Z28 emblem. Rust starting in both rear quarters and bottoms of front fenders. Pass floor patched w/fiberglass. Door hinges BADDDDDD! Auto car w/tilt wheel, fact. a/c, rear window defogger. It did have factory rear swaybar mounts (after market rear swaybar, though), missing center caps on wheels. Interior needs to be taken out and thrown away! Windshield cracked, grill missing many teeth. Back window leaking. There was NO Z28 stamped on the trim tag, but it had enough there, that I think it was a real Z. It did have decals on front fenders, rear spoiler and around the body and wheel wells. It did have rear swaybar. It was built in June (or July, I forget), and the VIN did have the "L" for 350 4 barrel. It did have guage package, and Z28 horn button. It did have a front spoiler on it at 1 time, etc., etc. Originally purchased in Fort Worth, and it had the original warranty pamphlet w/stickers in it that had the vin printed on them. Also had the original owners manual. Here's the phone number if anyone is interested in it: 817-244-3116. |

Thanks to all for forwarding their info and documentation. Keep it coming! I'm setting up a separate file on my computer to track everything. Hotrodman, not a problem, buddy, I've been wrong plenty of times in my life and will be again soon! I'm learning as we go just like everyone else. 71rs, that '77 Z28 sure sounds rough, doesn't it? Hope it finds a home none the less. Thanks to all of you for participating in this thread and in this project! Got a nice treat for you, now! When Chevrolet decided not to bring back the SS, but the Z28 instead, they obviously had the Trans Am market in mind, as witnessed by these early hood design proposals!:
Think they wound up making the right choice? Have no idea what the rest of the graphics were supposed to look like with these two choices. Not sure what the date of the designs were or how far into the Z28 project these were done. [This message has been edited by rich m (edited February 09, 2004).] |
