Ive been thinking of ways that you could make a little money on the board, and I came up with something. How bout a small, informal escrow service for swap meet transactions? Here is how it could work.
1)Buyer and/or seller agree to put the deal in "escrow" with you.
2) Buyer mails certified check or money order to you.
3) You let Seller know that monies have been recieved and for the proper amount. Seller then ships product
4) When you recieve shipping Tracking #/confermation you forward payment to the Seller.
5) You charge a fee (like around 5%)
This would do two things: 1) provide a needed service to the board and 2) Allow you to get money on the side from just walking to your mailbox and sending some emails. I know i would take advantage of this on larger transactions, and Im sure others would too. Everyone knows that they can trust you and would gladly pay the extra 5-10% if it meant the deal could happen right. You however would not be responsible for whatever becomes of the item in question, just a broker for the exhange of money for the item.

I was kinda thinking along those lines too but just not an escrow idea but a % [honor system] per completed transaction paypal'd to MadMike...

I like your idea, but that would take some 'accounting' on his part = time! Maybe *just* on the larger $$ items?

What i was suggesting was a purely voluntary system, used mostly on transactions in the hundreds and above. The accounting would be kept to a minimum because the checks and money orders would be made out to the seller not to mike, that way he doesnt have to keep track of hundreds or thousands of dollars that arent his, just pass them along. The Buyer could then send along a personal check or use paypall for his commision. I think it really sounds more complicated than it is.
BTW I like the straight commision idea too.

I like the idea. However, I think it would be an accounting/communications nightmare. I'm not speaking on Mike's behalf, but I think he's been in and out of the parts biz long enough to know what to expect.

I think it's a great idea to make money for the site on the side, but I don't know if we have the bandwidth to cover it.

Ok, buyer sends Mike a personal check. Mike lets me know he recieved check which is made out to me. I send product? Then I have to wait a couple more days to recieve check? Then I get check and it bounces. Geez, of course by then it's been over a week since I sent product. What recourse do I have - absolutely none, except I had to wait longer and deal with a middle man.

personal checks woulnt be allowed for that reason. Only cashiers checks and money orders.

There wouldnt be really any accounting involved, its the equivelent of someone trustworthy holding the money at a street race. Yes there are some pitfalls in this system, but they are the same as if they were done totally private, except that there would be no risk of loosing money for the buyer and seller. If both people are on top of it,the deal could only take about 2 days more to complete. I dont think it would be worth it to do this for about 20 small items a month, but for a $1000 blower or set of heads it might.
Oh yeah and I dont think its a real big deal to get a cashiers check or money order, its a small price to pay for something that you need. Its just a suggestion, and like other ideas there are always some wrinkles to iron out (if its even viable to begin with).

I don't think Mike wants to deal with anything like that. It was talked about before...just more stuff for people to send nasty emails out for...lol...

It all sounds simple enough- the problem? As mentioned- more nasty-grams over BS and time. Everything takes time- and I'm not so sure Mike (or anyone else for that matter) has lots of it to fool around with.
