Hey there,
I've been kicking around an idea for group restoration of a car for a couple years now and the idea has progressed into something much bigger. Originally I just wanted to get a bunch of people together on the Internet to vote on rebuilding a car, but to do that I would have to be a non-profit which expanded the idea into capturing part of the proceeds to donate to charity.

I don't want to ramble too much so to summarize; I am finally ready to do something about this idea and would like to get some feedback from the members here but don't think it's respectful to post a link without permission.
Here's the link; www.helphouse.org (it's not flashy at all just some simple text, but it gets the idea across).
So if your cool with it, I'd like to post the link in the B.S. section to see what people think. If no one here is interested I don't think i will invest any more time or money into the project so I guess you could call this a low key feasability study.

Thanks for your time and consideration.
Regards,
memmert

Yeah I think it would be a pretty cool project all the way around. I just don't know if I can generate enough interest to get it off the ground.

Hmmmm, 68 Pontiac you don't see very many of those around (at least I haven't), that would be a pretty cool first resto to start with.

I'd be in for it. Pretty cool deal I think. You'd just have to make sure it's all legal like. I think that includes showing where all the money goes. those secretive non descript "administration" costs always scare me off.

I'm the same way Lammy. Besides keeping a posted running budget of the car project itself I'd likely post some high points about the organization itself although the financials will be public record anyway. That is I believe that since I will be Incorporating with a 501(c)(3)IRS tax exemption all pertinent info will be available to anyone who wants it. Personally, I don't want to go to prison by way of tax fraud for the small change the project will generate so I think everyone's money will be safe.
I can't speak for MadMike but I think he could attest to how rigid the IRS can be with a non-profit (I think SGCOG is a non-profit?), though I don't know if he's incorporated or not?
After all the reading i've done I still don't know all the in and out's of a NP but I think i've researched enough to know that this is a viable idea, as well as what I need to know to ask when I retain legal council to finalize the incorporation docs. All in all I think I'm doing this right, it will be interesting to see how it progresses.

Also, for what it's worth this won't be the first corporation i've been involved with starting up. Myself and two other partners started a company called Benoit Communications Incorporated (BCI) in 1996 which turned out to be very successful though it's no longer around as it was purchased in 2000 by a wireless carrier.

It's funny that you spoke up (Lammy) as I was just thinking about you today and wondering what your rates for photoshop work were? I don't know how things will play out but I could see a great benefit in some mock ups during the exterior paint phase and the wheel/ride height phase to help people visualize the outcome of their choices. Sort of a rip off on the whole Car Craft thing. Come to think of it... it's kind of a Heinz 57 of Monster Garage, Car Craft "cheap street", Big Brother (the TV show){i.e. public voting}, and who knows what else.
I may be getting ahead of myself but it's something to kick around.

If anyone else out there has any comments/suggestions/flames to add PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE post. The more I talk about it the more the details begin to gel and I get that much closer to making this a reality.

Thanks for your support Mikey, beware... I might take you up on your offer to pitch in.

I want to post in the B.S. section, but I want to get a moderator's approval first.
I'm not looking for endorsement just an OK to post since posting something like your own Ebay auction is frowned on n stuff like that. I know i'm probably being a geek but I have a lot of respect for this board so I don't want to get on anyone's bad side.

Thanks Mike for letting me post. I will keep it honest and be respectful of the board.

By the way... I told the wife and a friend of hers about your recent tragedy and even though I don't know you personally I got all chocked up and could barely finish telling the story. I am so glad you all are still alive and on the road to recovery. Our family will keep yours in our thoughts.

I just went through founding a church, which is also a 501 C. UGH! lawyer is gonna run a bit. I'm sure you know if you've done a non profit before.

SGCOG BTW is not anything but a collective of folks, so far.

Hey I think the idea is awesome. If we got a Camaro and passed it around or donated some spare parts and put it all together I'm sure it would fly. I've said before on a post about a 'club car' I've got a paint booth here and am willing to do some color, if its going to be for a good cause.

Good to hear from you ZS10. Yeah I like the idea of a "community car project" but the only way I can think of making it work is to do it this way. I think the plan is going to be set back a bit though. I was banking on the fact that I could get around one of the rules in oregon that state I have to be a recognized as a non-profit for 1 year before being able to host a raffle, by doing the project build all along and only doing the actual "raffle" portion after my official 1 year waiting period. I don't think the state will let me do it so the plan may be set back a bit but it's not dead by any means.
The best way people can support this project is to send me the email as directed on the helphouse.org page. I cross my heart and hope to die that I will not use this mail list for anything except it's stated purpose.

That would be awesome to have the car shot by one of the people in the project or just volunteered, I wish you lived closer to Portland though. How far away are you from Portland?

WOW, I just looked at how close you are to Portland, OR. That is if you are in Duncan on the island. I will definately be taking you up on your offer.
This is great, People have really come together already to make this a reality. Now I need to get busy and get incorporated so we can move to the next step.
