I know MadMike's pretty busy these days, so I'll ask this out here where someone will likely know the answer. I finally went over to AOL broadband from dial up (Compuserve) today. I thought I'd have a problem being recognized on this BB with a new screen name and new ISP, but it picked me right up. How'd that happen?

because you are known on the BBS by your login, which is stored in the cookies for your browser. The BBS doesn't mater what service you use to connect, or from what machine or IP number.

OK, I guess that makes sense, but I didn't sign on or anything, it already knew my screen name and password. Spooky to me, maybe not to you folks a little better informed on this stuff!

WHOA, now it won't take this message until I use the new password it assigned me. Just answered my own question, I guess!

That's because it's stored in your browsers cookies. When you access the BBS the server reads the cookie off your computer and logs you in automatically.

I was posting stuff from the hospital using a publically accessable computer. So I had to go out of my way to make sure the computer wouldn't remember who I was or where I went while on the computer.

PS: Thanks for the letter kevin.

Compuserve uses alot of AOL's features including their modified browser and dial-up numbers. It's not a surprise that it retained your settings.
