Mike I just read what happened and am glad to here that your family is ok. It is hard to realize that life can change in a blink of an eye. Sometimes we never appreciate what we have until it is too late but you were given a mirical and a strong reminder of what your family means to you. Our love and prayers go out to your family and hope that all of you will come out ok and stronger as a family. |

Mike, I finally noticed this thread, don't know how I missed it for so long. You and your family have been on my prayer list since news of the accident hit the forum. But reading your description of what happend, it was more like reading a description of a scene out of a disaster/action movie. I'm glad you got everyone out and that they are all on the road to recovery. Praise God for that. |

WOW....I had no idea that it was this bad...I'll be praying for you and your family. This is really bad news...but at the same time...very good news that everyone is still with us. Mike, you are a great Dad, friend, and leader. I will continue to think about you and your family. |

Thanks guys. The support still helps. I can't say much. Anything I can say will be generic or vague. Yeah it's bad. Most people equate wrecks with physical pain & injury. We got that in spades, but the hidden (or not so hidden) emotional trauma is worse. For example, people can deal with a broken leg. But for a mother to have her heart ripped out because she can't attend to her disabled or disfigured children is hard. Laura couldn't see dan for a week. For 4 hours I was in the hospital under the assumption dan was gone. The only comfort I had was hearing "I'll be alright" earlier, and knowing he was flown to Scottish Rite. You guys also helped us get through June & July. Without what you guys did, I'd have been screwed in other ways. Supposedly my van should be "resolved" in another couple weeks. Fortunantly I'm not upside down on the loan. But I had to fall back to running my 2 beat cars (1 w/210K and the other with 230K). Hopefully I won't kill them before dans rehab is over (tenatively scheduled for the end of august). I also equated wrecks with physical injury. When you ask someone what their telephone number is and they respond with the town they live in, you get educated in the other aspects of injury. I discount what I did. It's a miricle dan left the van alive. But there was a "medical lady" (wearing scrubs - on her way to work or from work) who I saw attending to dan on the side of the road before any rescue people arrived on the scene. She was stabilizing dans head, and there was a good samaritan (40ish year old beer belly guy, wearing only cut off shorts and sneakers) straddling dan working one of those respirator bags which covers your mouth/nose and has a clear ball on it... several days later while in the ICU the nurse told me "if his airway hadn't been opened when it was...." Who put that lady there? I got dealt this hand so I'll play it as best I can. It's not easy, but with the support we get from all of you, friends & family, we'll get through it. Lastly, I'm fortunant to see (and be involved in) and be able to handle seeing the most violently injured children in this area. I see kids severely hurt who make daily progress. It's amazing. On day 1 a kid shows up who can't walk and can only mumble. And a week later the person is walking down the hall and talking to you. Unbelieveable what Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta can do for children. Edit: Dan is lucky he's not in the condition I just mentioned above. Yeah bad, but I get to see worse. This facility can only handle ~20 kids from SC, GA & AL. and dans 1 of them. [This message has been edited by MadMike (edited July 31, 2003).] |

Every time I read about this, I am moved. What I know about you only comes from your website and how other people feel about you, but that is enough to tell how good of a person you are. I can't think of anything that everyone else hasn't said already, so just know we are also praying for you and your family here. All of the work you have done for the SGCOG is amazing, this site is the best and most informative I have ever seen. I'm really glad you're still around to keep it up- Matt [This message has been edited by OSU76LT (edited August 01, 2003).] |

Like others on the site have already said, hang in there, you're in our prayers. ------------------ - Black 1979 Z28 w/ Camel Tan Interior. |
