Hi, I've been thinking about getting my 2001 Sonoma back on the road, and have been pondering what to do about the rusted out bed. It's a step-side\sport-side, so it's a pretty small(some say useless) bed. I could get a used bed from down south, looks like a bit less than $1K, but I thought I'd poll for ideas. I thought about building an all wood one, something like a stake truck, any other thoughts?

Do a wood bed. It'll look cooler and won't rust away all over again. You spend $1000 on a southern bed and you'll be doing it all over again in a couple years time. With wood you can just replace pieces that rot or break as necessary with little hassle. You might get a little more bed space too.

I'd take a look at the cab to frame mounts at the front of the doors, might not be much left there either. Pretty much dooms the S10 if so.

glass it up if you're just wanting to get it back on the road as a driver

I would just remove the bed entirely and rock on! Trailer lights on the back on the cab.
That's just me though, there is a tacoma running around my neighborhood with the same treatment and i think it looks kinda cool.

once the bed comes off it's very possible the frame is gone too

if not then slap a piece of plywood on the frame rails, zip tie some trailer lights on the back & call it a day
