Will the vin number and cowl tag numbers be the same? I'm beginning to think the cowl tag was swapped. Can someone please help before I start a restoration.

Not an expert on the later 2nd gens, but they won't be the same. The cowl tag is a body sequence number that only is a number assigned to the body build. The VIN number is the number assigned to the entire car. There will be a "relationship" between the two. There is a list for the early cars that can give a frame of reference between the two. If one number falls drastically out of step with the other than something is amiss. Not sure for the later second gens.

No, the VIN will not be on the cowl tag.

I might add that there are in fact "hidden VINS" on the body that were put in place for law enforcement to verify if tags were switched for stolen cars. Again, not an expert on the later cars but on the early ones they are stamped on the engine side of the firewall under the heater core housing (or the AC housing, it has to be removed). It will have the last 6 digits or so of the VIN number. Search NastyZ and you will see photos of them. Its a chore to get to them, but if its suspect it may be the only real way to verify.

I have a title stamped Z28 just want clarification, Car has just 48,000 miles on it. Just want to make sure its a real Z28. The 8 in the cowl tag says it is.

title is really irrelevant to proving its a z28

But vin says 350 so that's good. dates appear to jive. vin is may LA, cowl is may as well.

Were they building Camaro's in LA in 79? Thought they stopped after 72. Again, no expert on the later ones.

1975 Camaro production resumed at Van Nuys . 71 was the beginning of the gap .
