What kind of wheel would the spare tire have on a 71 RS/Z28? My 71 when I bought if several years ago in kit form came with 5 of the rally wheels. I was just wandering if GM back then would of used the matching wheel for a spare or just a regular wheel.

Matching wheel . Space saver was introduced on the Camaro ( second gen ) in 71 .

Yes, spare wheel would be exactly the same as the other 4 wheels except no trim ring and cap.

    Matching 15" wheel.

I believe the space saver spare didn't became available until 73.

I've heard 73 for the SS also.

That is really strange to me. You could option a SS on a 69 Camaro and it was in Firebirds in 1970 on. Why did it skip the 1970-72 Camaro's? They had it and it was even at the assembly plants for the Firebird. It was even keeping the Camaro's from getting the stereo radio option (no room for right side speaker with spare in place). Just makes no sense.

That's my problem I put dual speakers in the rear of mine and the spare has severe rubbing against the speaker.

I always figured a performance car with positraction should have a regular wheel and tire to protect the rear end if the spare was used. And 15 inch wheels with low profile tires were somewhat rare in those years. Sure filled up the trunk though.

There is a Tech Bulletin for the Pontiacs on this, only certain tires were used for cars w/ Posi Traction. There prob is one for Chevy as well.

I agree it makes no sense what so ever that it wasn't an available option when GM already had it... especially when it was available on the Firebird like you said.
