In my 71, can a solid headliner be installed in place of the 6-panel bow type?

I prefer the look of the solid style with the smoother contour.

Also want to add a low profile twin light fixture at the front windshield between the sun visor. The headliner would provide a route for the wiring.

    Could also insulate the overhead

I just did it in my 70 and was able to use all my original trim pieces. I'll post pictures later. This is the headline i used, you need to email him a tell him you want it for a 70-73 and he will fill in the seat belt cutout. i had him add extra material on the ends and not glue the last 2" so i can adjust the board. i also insulated the roof with the Lowes stuff.

Here are some pictures. They came out pretty dark, i'll try to get better ones. Unfortunately the previous owner put in a sunroof and i don't fell like tackling that project yet to remove it. I do have an original 70 roof section for the future. Headliner comes with some insulation on it already. I did glue and staple wood stringers on both side to stiffen up, i think because of sunroof it was deforming it. You will have to trim and play with it to fit nice.

Previous owner of my 71 put an OEM board in the car, but no headliner. Fit well and had the seat belt cutouts. Took it out because the old foam deteriorated bad and would blow around the car and get in my eyes.
Back in high school, my 77 Firebird had a board and no headliner. I used a big AC/DC tapestry for the headliner. Came out great.

Pete, in the 2nd photo, I see irregular lines in the liner material. Is this so or is the material smooth?

Is it press board? Plastic? Pics are hard to tell?

The reason I ask is I have a solid headliner, but it's seen better days..if I knew what material was used on that I could try source some locally. Then trace my headliner onto the new material.

    Thanks
