I used a wire wheel on a drill with excellent results. Replaced it all with modern urethane seam sealer, let it set up and repainted the firewall with some high temp epoxy.

Got the old seam sealer removed today from the entire firewall & cowl. I used a heat gun, scraper and wire wheel on a 4" grinder in that order. Worked really well.
Actually a pretty good way to spend a Saturday afternoon while listening to some Tom Petty. Had a productive day.

That H/F tool is great. I burned one up under warranty. Got the second and have had it for 5 yrs. I always run any electric tool from H/F full blast for a couple mins now before I used them. Let them cool and I have had good luck. I think the brushes need to get seated. I usually blow them out with compressed air when done too.

I've always used a wire wheel/air-powered die grinder...cleans up just about anything.
...Hate picking the wheel's wires outta my forehead though...
