So did early built 70 Camaro's have carpet between the rear seats and then switched to a vinyl insert? I always thought it was the other way around.

Camaro Central is selling ACC moulded carpeting including the carpeted tail section (hump cover). They say its correct for 1975 - 1981 Camaros.
My standard interior 70 has a build date in the first week of March 1970 and has the original vinyl hump cover.
Fbody Warehouse has hump covers that appear to be carpeted ($39.00). Their description states that they will fit 1970 - 1981. Sounds like they are universal Fbody hump covers.
Collector car author Jim Schild in his book "Collectors Originality Guide- Chevrolet Camaro 1970 - 1981", points out a carpeted hump cover on a 70 Camaro with a standard interior.
He implies that it is correct for a 70.

Based on how my car was when I bought it, I believe the interior was 100% original. It a B month build and had carpet, no vinyl hump.

Try to clarify my post. My 01A build 70Z had carpet between the rear seats. Over top of the carpeted hump was an additional piece of carpet shaped like the vinyl piece shown by Chuck's picture. I will try to locate that piece of carpet and take a picture to show it. Attached on the back of it was a stapled tag with a September 1969 date along with a part number stamped on the tag.

That's weird that factory would put another piece of carpet on top of the carpet. I wonder if rear hump carpet was something left over from the 69 Camaro that was used up, especially with a Sept 69 date on it.

I've had two 03C built 70 Camaro's (1 from LA & 1 from Norwood) and both have a padded vinyl hump cover.

Only a very few of the first '70s off the assembly line had carpet between the seats. Once production got into full swing, the vinyl piece was used. Perhaps Chevy didn't have the vinyl pieces ready when production started. For the majority of the cars, vinyl would be correct.

My 01C body build, car build in Feb, had the vinyl so the switch was before that time.
