Is there a way to tell from the cowl tag if a car came with the center console or not? I have a 1977 Z28, 4spd and I was trying to figure out if there ever was a center console in the car and what options it came with. Seems to be one of the "racer delights". Z28 package, 4 spd, with no other frills. No AC, manual windows, etc....

On my 79, the console is listed as "D55 Console Front". If the car was originally equipped with a console, there should be a raised mount point between the front seats. You could lift the carpet and tell if the mount was cut off, but most shade tree hacks wouldn't go to that much trouble.

How do you know if it was a factory 4sd car?

If the tranny is still there, check the partial VIN on it. An original tranny will have a VIN that matches the VIN on the car. If the tranny is no longer there, the job becomes more difficult. Then you need some kind of documentation to know.
