I have a 1981 z28 with AC. I installed Summit ceramic headers. The passenger side installed was about a 1/2" away from my ac box. Unfortunately, when I pulled the motor this week, the header melted the bottom part of my ac box. Pic is below. So, a few questions if anyone can help:

If I repair the damage, will a heat shield of some sort stop the header from melting my box?

If not, is there better fitting header that wouldn't melt my box? I hear Headman is the best fitting. So if a member out there has headman with an original ac system could chime in?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I can tell you that the Hedman Huslers # 65104 are extremely tight...I am talking less than 1/4 " of clearance to the box.....1980 Z 28 350 4 speed A/C

So did they melt your ac box? If not, I’m baffled.

Not yet but I have only had them on a short time...maybe 3-4 trips to town.
The last time i shot the header temp in that location it was 380ish after a few trips around the block and .....a few burnouts just to make sure I liked the new sound with the X pypes and violator mufflers.

    Wdstamper,
After looking at your pictures you really had me wondering so when I got home I just snapped this picture. I guess I have 3 or 4 hours of running them. And the way I drive I'm sure they got Max temp. IMG_20171110_171224152~2.jpg

Wow! Your header was closer than mine was. I’m surprised it has not melted your ac box. What brand are your headers?

They are coated with two layers of cerakote. Cerakote is a ceramic coating used in the gun industry and has great heat retention.

Did your headers come that way from headman or did you have them coated with cerakote?
