So I'm considering going with a FiTech carburetor 30002 model. However do I really need the fuel command center that's sold separately in order for it too work properly or can I just get a better fuel pump instead? Don't want to spend an extra 400 dollars on a part when it's not necessary.

You cannot run it off a mechanical fuel pump alone

Where a carb system only runs 6-9lbs of pressure and a Fitech unit has a internal regulator set at 48lbs you will have to have a pump/sys that can fulfill the units requirement. From what I have read lately Fitech has solved most of the new product malfunctions on the FCC(fuel command center) but there are other ways about it as there are systems out there that allow you to keep your carb tank and convert it over to a EFI style setup. I at the time of my conversion ordered a "Tanks Inc." EFI tank & walbro pump which was if memory serves me right was roughly the same price as the FCC.
