If it s/b like the one in the sales brochure are they available in the after market??? Thanks

You have the correct one. The one in the brochure is for the console cars.

Correct 1971 Z28 Camaro Shifter Knob

    Z287T1

THE KNOB YOU HAVE DESCRIBED IS CORRECT FOR 1969 1970 Z28 4SPD CAMAROS WITHOUT CONSOLES

1971 4 SPD SHIFTER KNOBS CHANGED FROM A ROUND BALL MADE OF HARD PLASTIC TO A TEXTURED HARD RUBBER KNOB AND IS CONE SHAPED ON THE LOWER PART OF THE KNOB AND THEN THE TOP SECTION IS ROUNDED WITH A FLAT TOP

THE 1971 CAMARO SALES BROCHURE SHOWS THE CORRECT 1971 STYLE TEXTURED HARD RUBBER CONE SHAPED ROUNDED FLAT TOP KNOB WITH THE WHITE SHIFT PATTERN ON TOP OF THE KNOB LISTED IN THE Z28 SECTION

THE 1971 CAMARO ASSEMBLY MANUALS LIST THE FOLLOWING PART NUMBERS FOR YOUR KNOB

    UPC M20 M21 SHEET 7A-1 BOX 15
3992556 W/O CONSOLE - WITH WHITE SHIFT PATTERN ON TOP OF KNOB

    UPC D55 7A-5
3992558 W/ CONSOLE - NO SHIFT PATTERN ON TOP OF KNOB

PLEASE NOTE THE 1971 CAMARO ASSEMBLY MANUAL DRAWING OF THE SHIFTER BALL WAS NOT UPDATED TO SHOW THE CORRECT SHAPE FO THE 1971 SHIFTER KNOB AND CONTINUED TO USE TO 1969 AND 1970 DRAWING OF A SHIFTER BALL

THE LINK BELOW SHOWS THE CORRECT STYLE 1971 TEXTURED HARD RUBBER CONE SHAPED ROUNDED FLAT TOP KNOB BUT IS CORRECT FOR CONSOLE CARS AND DOES NOT HAVE THE SHIFT PATTERN ON TOP OF THE KNOB

    http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showpost.php?p=342406&postcount=1

BUT THIS KNOB IS THE CORRECT STYLE FOR 1971 Z28 CAMAROS - YOU NEED THIS STYLE KNOB BUT WITH THE WHITE SHIFT PATTERN ON TOP OF THE KNOB AS PICTURED IN THE SALES BROCHURE

KNOBS ARE BASE ON ONLY TWO OPTIONS WITH CONSOLE OR WITHOUT CONSOLES AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH INTERIOR TYPES

I have the original Shifter Knob for my 1971 RS Z28 (console delete) and it is in fact a Round Black knob with the shift pattern in white. It is a Hurst Shifter.

The above shifter knob is correct for 1972 on up ITM shifter equiped Z28's. But not on a 1971 as far I know.

Someone else have some more information?

I agree. All Chevrolets converted from hard to "soft knobs" in '71 for the dash and shifters (except Corvette shifters). All part of impact safety, human impact that is. I had a new '71 SS and I remember that rubber shifter knob and how wierd it was at the time and I replaced it with a Hurst "T" handle within the first week. I had a no console car and after a month I installed a Hurst Comp-Plus shifter and through out the factory Hurst.

The new dash knobs also included international graphics which I thought was ridiculous and "cartoonish" back then.

Wow, now I am totally confused:confused: Thanks for all the input. The reason I am questioning this is my buddy has a 71 norwood z w/ console and he has that wierd rubber one that looks alot like the sales brochure. But Bob R and the other console delete cars I have seen have the one he and I have ( the round ball ) Are we 100% sure I have the wrong one???? OR???? Lets keep this going to find out for sure! Thank you all!

Sales Brochures are usually just paintings. Some are pictures, some are not. Sometimes the Assembly Manuals are wrong. Pages are superceded.

Many years later, parts carry the same number but yet are a different part. They always run out at some point in time.

Unless someone on this BB is an "Original Owner" of a 1971 Z28 and has something different, I am going to say almost to a 99.9 % that a 1971 Z28 Camaro with no console had a Black Shifter knob (Round) with the Shift Pattern in White on the top. It was a Hurst Shifter.

1972 on up had a different shifter with a different knob, completely.

Correct 1971 Z28 Camaro Shifter Knob

    MORE FACTS WITHOUT OPINIONS

I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW NARROW MINDED PEOPLE ARE ON THIS SITE - UNBELIEVABLE - EVEN WITH THE FACTS YOU INSIST YOUR RIGHT WITH ONLY YOUR OPINIONS - WHAT MORE FACTS DO YOU NEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS LISTED IN GR 4.006 IN THE 1971 CHEVROLET PASSENGER CHEVELLE NOVA CAMARO PARTS CATALOG DATED SEPTEMBER 1970

71* INDICATES NEW PART FOR 1971 MODEL YEAR

THE 1971 CAMARO NOS SHIFTER KNOB MATCHES THE PART NUMBER 3992558 KNOB USED IN 1971 CAMARO ASSEMBLY MANUAL AND IN THE 1971 CHEVROLET PARTS CATALOG FOR THE KNOB WITH CONSOLE

THE 3992556 KNOB IS USED WITHOUT CONSOLE AS LISTED IN THE 1971 CHEVROLET PARTS CATALOG

3992556 AND 3992558 ARE THE CORRECT KNOBS FOR THE 1971 CAMARO

LOOKS LIKE THE SALES BROCHURE, THE 1971 CAMARO ASSEMBLY MANUAL ARE NOT WRONG

THE 1971 CHEVROLET PASSENGER CHEVELLE NOVA CAMARO PARTS CATOLOG DATED SEPTEMBER 1970 IS NOT USING SUSPERCED PART NUMBERS

THIS INFORMATION IS FROM 1971 AND IS CORRECT

99.9% OF THE TIME WHEN A PRODUCTION PART HAS A CHANGE SUCH AS PHYSICAL CHANGE OR IF A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURER BEGINS PRODUCING THIS PART THERE WILL BE A PART NUMBER CHANGE

ONLY IN A FEW CASES SUCH AS THE FRONT HEADER PANEL EMBLEM ON THE 1970 CAMARO WHERE THERE IS A PHYSICAL CHANGE TO EMBLEM FROM THE EARLY PRODUCTION 1ST DESIGN EMBLEM TO THE LATER PRODUCTION 2ND DESIGN EMBLEM WITHOUT A PART NUMBER CHANGE - HOWEVER THIS IS VERY RARE

IN THIS CASE NO CHANGE IN THE PART OR PART NUMBER AND THIS STYLE KNOB WAS NEW FOR THE 1971 MODEL YEAR AS STATED IN THE 1971 CHEVROLET PARTS CATALOG

THE SAME PART NUMBER INFORMATION IS LISTED IN THE 1973 PASSENGER CAR CAMARO CHEVELLE NOVA PART CATALOGS FOR THE 1971 SHIFTER KNOBS

TO ADD TO THIS CONFUSION THE 3955762 UPPER HALF AND 395763 LOWER HALF KNOB LISTED IN THE 1969 AND 1970 CAMARO ASSEMBLY OR AS LISTED IN THE CHEVROLET PASSENGER CHEVELLE CAMARO NOVA PARTS CATALOG AS THE 3961437 (2 PIECE)KNOB ASSEMBLY WHICH IS THE BLACK PLASTIC KNOB WITH THE CHROME BASE WITH THE WHITE SHIFT PATTERN USED WITH CONSOLE DELETE IN 1969 AND 1970 ARE IN REPRODUCTION MAKING THEM QUITE EASY TO PURCHASE AND INSTALL ON ANY CAMARO

HOWEVER WHEN THE 1971 Z28 CAMARO WAS NEW AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS IT WAS COMMON PLACE TO REMOVE THE ORIGINAL GM KNOB AND REPLACE WITH A HURST T HANDLE OR SOME AFTERMARKET KNOB MAKING THE ORIGINAL 1971 SHIFTER KNOB ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND

    Shift knob

Not responding to argue but to just say my 71 Z/28 without the console had
the hard black plastic knob with the the shift pattern in white.
