Good day! I searched for a simple thing, "Best oil to use." and came up empty. I realize it is very subjective but does anyone recommend SYNTHETIC and what weight. My newly rebuilt 350 has exactly 1000 miles and it has been broken in somewhat carefully. Thanks for advice. Would really appreciate exactly which brand and number of oil filter.

If a roller cam, I would use a good synthetic oil. If a flat tappet cam, I would use a good synthetic oil with zinc in it. Synthetics cost more, but lubricate better than petroleum oil.

I hear Wix makes a good oil filter. Stay away from Fram.

I haven't rebuilt an engine is 20 or more years. I'm sure metallurgy has advanced. Friends who still build engines always use NON synthetic oil to break them in. especially the rings. They all say the rings won't seat properly as synthetic is TOO slippery. Get it good and broke in and then switch to synthetic. Personally, I always would tape a couple of large ceramic magnets to the filter to catch the really small ferrous particles make from metal flashing and that were missing in cleaning.

NAPA Gold Filter (Made by WIX) and Mobile-1 synthetic oil.
But first.... I dump a 2 oz. bottle of ZDDP Maxx in the Mobile-1 oil jug.

I put a crate engine in my Camaro 8 years (50K miles) ago.... Been using this recipe the entire time.
I don't even bother checking the oil for the first 3000 miles.
I've never had to add more than a pint to get to the full mark (at 5k) and it gets changed it 6-7K.

Thanks everyone. I used to use Amsoil and Amsoil Filter on my 1969 302 motor. It never broke, enduring years of abuse. I understand NAPA Gold and WIX are same and replaced the Amsoil Filter.
