from what I can tell under 18x mag it was hot foil stamped ... which is really not a foil, it is like a potato chip bag, used as a carrier film that is metalized (vaporized aluminum deposited in a vacuum chamber) which is hot stamped onto the front of the grille face.
Hot foil stamped appears as frosted aluminum.

I learned a good deal about vacuum metalized films plastics and paperboard when I supplied companies manufacturing and printing cosmetic, golf ball, and consumer packaging. One of my largest customers had hot foil stamping machines which applied it to paperboard boxes, (not metalized paperboard which is a different product), the finish is near identical, problem is it is not very scuff resistant a few years of washing and prolonged UV would damage it.
