I know this is a dumb question but I've never used one before. I am finally getting my own shop set up and I bought a craftsman air pressure regulator/filter and I hooked it up today and the gauge will fluctuate when nothing is hooked to it. Why would it be doing that? Also how do you set the pressure does air have to be running through it? Sorry for the newb ?'s

Don't know why it would fluctuate, could be a bad regulator. You don't need air flow to adjust the pressure, just turn the know clockwise to reach desired psi. I usually keep mine turned up all the way, my switch is set to kick off at 120psi.

Any chance you plumbed it backwards? If so, the pressure indicated on the gauge would represent the pressure from the compressor and would fluctuate.
