The actual ignition switch is toward the bottom of the column. Is it adjusted correctly? Other wise you will have to pull off the steering wheel and look inside .To see if there are issues there.Good lock to you.

I'm guessing it's an automatic transmission... Correct?

The back drive linkage from the transmission to the column is probably worn or out of adjustment.

Grab the collar on the steering column (right in front of the gauges) and twist it counter clockwise.
That should get the column internals in the correct position to lock the wheel and allow the key to be removed.

    Good Luck!

The collar won't budge from where its sitting and the key still will not come out.

If the key won't turn back to "Off"... There must be something jamming either the switch itself (screwed to top of column by the firewall) or the rack and sector pieces are messed up.

The tilt column rack and sector kit is available as a HELP (Dorman) part #83211. (Under $10)

For future reference: (Tilt version pictured.)

Twisted is correct the rack is probably broken. I have changed a few over the years with this issue.

Huh would the tilt still work if the rack is broken? Thanks for the help!
