Wow that's a nice original car Mark. I wouldn't mess with it. If you do leave the engine compartment untouched. A 3.73 rear end change will improve performance a lot. That's where I would go first.

You will not keep up with modern cars without major changes. Time to honest up on how important staying original is and how you really intend to use the car.

Gears and an exhaust well go as long way if you want a fun local driver without major changes. But it won't be a mid 11s new camaro

a stock Ecoboost Taurus is very low 14s, with a tune & some bolt ons....high 12s

I have a 09 Pontiac G8/GXP so I already own a fast car... My original plan was to find a real clean 80-81 Z/28 and put a modern drive train in the car and build it with the latest technology, Problem is this car is just too nice to be swapping an engine into so I was trying to find a tasteful way to wake it up. Well that is not gonna work so I'm just gonna leave it alone and try to enjoy it the way it is. Thanks...

Good call !!!!!!!! I was hoping all along. 81s look fast to bad not so. I did a cam and a new carb no other mods, just set carb hookups to the side, in 88 I could just pass my buddy's and there 5.0 stangs, it was plenty fun

Thank God, it would be a shame to modify such an original car

Very nice car. I would bump the timing and be done with it. The 77-81 were never performer cars, they were handling cars. I know cause I ordered new 4-spd Z28's in 77, 78 and 80. I would not dare modify an unmolested Z28. You have the 70 as the HIPO toy. Leave the '81 alone or it'll cry.

If I found a nice orig 4-spd 77 Z28, I would not diddle with it. The only reason I like the 77 Z28 is because it was my very 1st car I ever ordered new and it handled like a cats azz for a '77 car. I loved it. http://my1970z28.com/COPO/my_z28s.htm
