I recently saw a posting in another topic with a member signature indicating that they have a 79 Z with"non- functioning side vents".
I had seen this referenced in a test drive in an old Popular Hot Roding magazine back in the day, but thought that it was a typo.
I have a 79 that I have had since September 79, built June 79, and the side vents are open and functioning from the factory.
Are there functioning and non-functioning side vents?
Mine is a Norwood build, so I wonder if the vents are open or closed depending on build date and/ or where it was produced?

I bought my 79 Z28 new also and the side fender vents are open but with the inner fender in place, they are closed off and serve no purpose other than looks. I'd guess you could make them functional with some tin work, I haven't seen it done on a street car though.

These vents are open to the engine compartment and are a great way to get rid of under hood heat. The attached shot is from the engine compartment, behind the inner fender. The vents are between the fire wall and the wheel well liner. You can see the light to the outside of these functional side louvers.

I'll have to take another look when I get my inner fenders back on, I'm in the middle of a drawn out engine swap now.

You can also see and feel the heat from the engine compartment on a cold day.
