I am headed to the Turlock swap meet next week to look for parts for a 1970 RS/SS 396 car I am restoring. Specifically, I am looking for a water pump and a fuel pump. My car was built in March in LA. I believe the correct water pump number is 3969811. I have no idea about the fuel pump number. Any help is appreciated.

Not sure about the fuel pump numbers, but you are correct on the 3969811 waterpump. If you are not already aware, the waterpumps have dates cast into the front. - If you are going so far with the correct part, you may want to ensure you find one that is date sensitive to your car. - I would suggest if the original engine is in the car, check the assembly date on the stamp pad and go with dates a few weeks to a month or so earlier than that date. if the original engine is long gone, I'd say check the assembly date on the cowl tag and go for one about 2-3 months before the cowl date.

The 811 waterpumps are fairly common on ebay. Most have already been rebuilt and if you look around enough, there are all sorts of dates available. - Ditto for starters, distributors, etc.

Swap meets are fun no doubt and the thrill is in the hunt....,

The fuel pump is a 6440727 for a 70 big block L78 I'm not 100% for a L34 but I think the pump is the same.

Thanks, I do have the numbers matching motor and will be looking for date correct parts, just need to get the correct part numbers. I believe the only non-correct parts on the motor are the two pumps and the starter. I have come up with a possible fuel pump number of 40568 (from a late 1969 built L34) but I'm not sure that would be good for an early 1970 L34. I will enjoy the hunt though.

I have seen that part number, just not sure if it is correct for my L34.

I have a book that shows the 40727 pump as being used on 1970 Camaro with 396. This book does not state if it was used on L34 or L78.

Yes I believe both the 1970 L34 & L78 engines used the same fuel pump. However the L34 engines did have a 1/4" fuel return line but it came off the fuel filter.
