79 with turbo 350 behind a 406 SBC around 450 est hp-the trans leaks like a sieve when not in use. I was about to pull the trigger on a 700R4 but someone mentioned the 200 would not require a different drive shaft.
If you have a 200 R4 tell me the ins/outs of it. Advantages of either.
This winter is work time on the car, it gets an interior and quite possibly a new transmission. I like the overdrive part of it.

200r will also keep the current gearing you have, it will just have over drive.
    I would go 200r over 700.

I have a 700 in the truck and it isn't a problem, but that's me. Most complain about the spread between 1st and 2nd gear, it is pretty short. The 200 is a closer match to the TH350 and will be easier to install, but the 700 isn't much more involved. There are a few things to be aware of though. 200-4r transmissions are getting harder to find and some are adding a premium to the price for that reason. both the 200 and 700 are very weak in stock form and neither will hold up behind any kind of serious power without upgrades. Take a look at Jake's site to get some info about the differences. I don't think he does the 700-r4, but GM renamed it the 4L60 later in its life. If you plan to use any of that power you will want to find a qualified shop to harden which ever transmission you choose. Good luck.

Be nice if someone made a 700 first gear not so low so the spread is not as great.

Also start putting much power to the 200 and you need $$ parts in it. I have Pontiac buddies pushing 600 HP through them but cost 3K+ for tranny and convertor. Just picked one up from a friend who needed some cash form the same builder. Just look at Jake's page on 200Rs

Different gears are available for the 700 ,think it was a 2.85 gear for first,a 350 is 2.75, stock for 700 is 3.06, then second was 1.6 ,I saw them on raptor transmissions website.

Yup,thx for refresh. Think od fo 200 was .67 compared to the .70 for 700,had a 700/4.10 combo, getting traction was almost impossible. I'd like the 4l80 but to much at time, was going rate now? I went 350 and 3.70 gears,no od suks.

Yeah I just want over drive.. I know the 700 and 200 would cost more to build than the 4l80 to live behind a big block.

    my build
1700 for rebuilt 4l80 with transgo hd-2 shift kit
    800 for converter
    690 for computer
    100 for fluid
    130 for shorten drive shaft
and little things here and there--100

The 200r4 is just like any of the above mentioned including the 700r4 are 80's trannys. All getting scarce. The 200r4 is bolt in. Parts are harder to get, but most all reproduced. Mine came from Ck performance. The tricky part is any linkage mods for a qjet or other carb for the tv cable. Rest is just a lock up relay or switch.
