S-10 steering box direct bolt in?

The pitman arm seems to have a 3" offset and mine on the car is strait?

I'm about to make this swap as well, so I'd like to see a reply here too!

From what I've read over and over again, you use the stock S-10 manual box with your stock Camaro Pitman Arm. That's it

just did the swap on my 70 the only problem that arose is that the shaft on the s10 box is thinner than the box I removed. do I need a coupler from the s10 ??

By 'shaft' do you mean the threaded arm that the pitman arm is connected to ? I know what you're referring to if that's what you mean because I had that issue as well a long time ago.

If you stick to a 3rd gen unit....you'll get the same diameter shaft for the pitman arm. Then use the S-10 steering coupler (rag joint) if its for an early year car (76 or earlier - maybe up into early 77)....otherwise use the 'metric' coupler....

the shaft that attaches to the rag joint is to skinny to attach my existing rag joint. Do I need to change the rag joint and if so which one to buy thanks

There are two different S-10 boxes. The 525 box(also the most common replacement aftermarket box) uses a different pitman arm. I believe it is the 89 and later ones that use the 778 box. It is a direct swap , just did it on my 79. Rag joint a direct swap also, althoug I used Borgeson needle bearign joints and collapsable shaft. Also the early F body manual boxes use a specific pitman arm also, I think it is being repoped and on E bay some.

I'm curious of what the attraction is with these S-10 boxes, several people have done it, and I was just wondering what the advantages are of running these boxes.

At $310...you could add a couple bucks and get a brand new quick ratio AGR unit. Junk yard box is probably the way to go if you're looking to do the swap. Are you just looking to free up a belt from the motor?

Read this

This is the correct casting number manual box for the later model cars, I don't think it works for the 77 & prior camaros.

A 10 second street car, eh!
SBC 409, through the mufflers, on DOT radials, you know, like a street car should be.

I Gotcha, I figured it was probably the extra belt tugging at the motor.

There are faster ratio 525 boxes out there but they take a custom pitman arm. The 778 boxes can reuse the PS one.

I was wondering the same thing. Because I drive a '90 S10 PU w/manual steering,5 spd ,4 cyl to work everyday. I like the way it turns but I don't think I enjoy it more than I used to enjoy my '80 camaro the steering just feels a little tighter but its a pain for parking.
