My 71SS has two partial vins on the firewall, one next to the opening where the blower motor hole is and another one behind the AC evaporator box.
Look here to the left of the square opening. It's in a vertical position:

I hear there is another one on the front frame rails but I can't find that one.

thanks that's what i thought. is there any way to find out if this car was stolen. the reason i ask is that the vin number has been changed. i have a title that matches the current vin tag, but i wonder why it's been changed. the previous onwer doesn't know anything about it. this car came from nevada with no engine or trans there for no vin on block. the car was repainted with what looks like a brush. car now lives in wis.

Straight to the point: Let there be no doubt that it is illegal to tamper with a VIN on a vehicle or even the parts of a vehicle.
Quote:
18 USCS § 2321 (2003)
§ 2321. Trafficking in certain motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts
(a) Whoever buys, receives, possesses, or obtains control of, with intent to sell or otherwise dispose of, a motor vehicle or motor vehicle part, knowing that an identification number for such motor vehicle or part has been removed, obliterated, tampered with, or altered, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both.
SUMMARY: Illegally removing or altering a vehicle identification number (VIN) or selling or possessing a motor vehicle or motor vehicle part with an altered or removed VIN constitutes a crime in most states. In order to impose liability, state courts normally require a culpable mental state on the part of the defendant in altering or removing a VIN or in possessing a vehicle or vehicle part with an altered or removed VIN. Some states, however, do not require any culpable mental state on the part of the defendant when selling a vehicle or vehicle part with a removed or altered VIN.

I would call the seller and tell him he sold you a bogus car and give him the opportunity to buy it back before you call the cops. Sadly it may be too late as he seems to be already pleading ignorance of the fact. He might have found that out himself and decided to dump the problem on someone else. The only way to know is to call the cops. Unless a large sum of money was invested, you may not get the cops to even investigate and you may have to find another way to get him, such as hiring a lawyer to rattle his cage.
All car owners need to read this--------------> Camaro lover has lost over $27,000 due to the car he purchased being a stolen car.

It doesn't matter whether a large sum of $$$ was invested or not, the cops should investigate. Money amount does not dictate whether police investigate. Anytime a VIN plate has been tampered with, the car is seized immediately by the cops. Call the cops and open an investigation. Also, there are no confidential VIN derivatives on the front frame rails or rear package tray. They are only located on the engine's front machined surface by right head, and left rear bell housing flange; on passenger side of trans, and firewall as seen above. Your full VIN is on the public VIN plate on the dashboard and Federal label on the door. If found anywhere else, it is a restamp by the vehicle owner or prior owner to act as their own security system.

Yes, its does. The are $$ amount on what constituties a felony and if you paid cash and never got something in writing, there is no way to prove a value. A Bill of Sale, to be legally binding in many states must have the sellers name and drivers license number as well as legal address, the VIN of the vehicle, the date, the owners signature, the price paid, the buyers name and address and possibly notorized. Lets be real, how many every get this and really want what the paid put down on paper for fear of having to pay tax or duty on that amount? Without that, its hard to prove a value on a car with no engine, maybe no trans, which is basically a junk yard dog as they would see it.
I did not mean to imply that they would never investigate but think about it for a minute. . With new cars being stolen every day, spending time chasing down a $100 beater is not likely to get thier attention unless there is a tie in to on going case. Did you take a look at the link? That guy has been in limbo for 6 months and has no idea whats going on.

Money amount only determines the seriousness of the crime. Whether its a felony or a summary, the police should investigate. I would, and have been doing so for 25 years now. Howie, good luck.
Howie, give us more details on your purchase........

the car was bought about a year ago for $1600. from a guy who was going to build a pro touring out of it. he had it in his shop a few years and didn't really do much with it- lost interest and sold it to me. this is a beautiful rust free almost dent free body (door dings and the such). the car is in the shop sanded down to bare metal right now. anyway contacted the guy i bought it from yesterday about the changed vin and he said he didn't know anything about it. said when he bought the car he just check the title against the cowl tag and they matched. didn't know about hidden vin numbers. just figured the title matched the vin so all was good. he did give me the name and number of the guy he bought it from so i will call him today and see what his story is. going to stress to him that this could be a federal offense with severe jail time plus it was transported across state lines . all i want is some answers as to why it was changed and to get the correct vin and title to this car, i don't want my money back, this is such a clean car that i want to keep it. really don't want to get anymore people involved than i have to. don't want to lose the car. if i can get proof that it's not stolen or anything i would possibly apply for a state issued vin.

Howie, can you post pics of the top and underside of the VIN tag, and the body ID plate. Also, is this car a Z28, SS, etc? If you don't want to post it here and would prefer to PM me, thats OK too.

the car is at the body shop right now but i could get them in the next couple of days. as far as pics of the underside of vin tag, do you mean like pics of it under the dash? i can do that if that is what your looking for. i know the rivets have been changed. the vin tag says it was built in norwood, and the body tag and hidden vin says l.a. i'll probably pm you. no the car is not aZ28 or SS. it was originally a sport coupe with a 307 and column shift.
