ARP Nut & Bolt question
Hey ..I picked up an ARP engine bolt kit at the speed shop today and have never done this so i couple of questions
1.
they threw in a little bottle of teflon thread sealer..Do i use this on every bolt or just ones that will have more stress on them..(motor mounts..head studs..main studs).
2.
Another q for the sealer..Do i cover the entire bolt (the threads) or just lay a medium sized stripe around the bolt?
3.
Some of the bolt holes..(motor mount/timing chain cover) are really hard to go all the way through..should i clean them out with a tap/chaser or just muscle them in?..they have a lil paint in them i think from what the tanking didnt clean out.L8R-RickY

1 and 2 I think the sealer is for any bolt that might go into a water passage
3 definitely tap any holes that might have crud in them. Any debris like that can affect your torque readings when you torque the bolts down (you do have a torque wrench, right?)

lol..yes i have a tq wrench.
hmm..I tapped those two holes and then i got tap happy and tapped all of the holes in the block ..just for hell of it..kinda fun.

ok..time for a newbie question
On the timing chain side of the block they're are two large holes on each side..im guesin these are water passage ways..
What is the name/purpose of the bolts that go above and below these holes?

That would be where your water pump goes.
The two larger holes is where the water is pumped into the block.
The threaded holes above and below them is the bolt holes that the water pump bolts go in.
You put the put up, put 4 bolts through the holes in the pump, and thread them into those 4 holes

I always chamfer the head bolt block holes so the top threads won't pull up and cause a miss reading on my torque wrench.
On SB's, I chamfer the top of each cylinder bore just a bit so that the rings don't hang up when I whack them into the cylinder using the wooden handle of my 3 pound Ford tool...
Be careful b/c if the top of the piston doesn't make that nice "ka-thunk" sound, the rings MAY be hung up??????? AND watch your rod bolts going past the crank journals b/c you don't want to scratch your journals!!
On my BB, I did the same but also relieved the top of each cylinder bore out to the headgasket outline on both valves to aid sucking.

One more kwikie..What are the holes about a half inch below where the cylinder heads bolt up.There are 3 on each side and very small..maybe 3/16-1/4 or so.

I believe the holes your talking about are for the heat shields that protect the sparkplug boots for 'under the manifold' plug cables. They should be a blind tap and not go through the casting into the water jacket (if that's where your looking at) 2 are for heat shields, one is for a wore loom, on the passengers side one was for the starter support bracket.
