Big hole in firewall

I cant remember what goes here. In between the hole for the steering column and the main fuse panel, and just above the round hole for the speedo cable, is a 2" or so hole that I just cant seem to figure what goes here. Duh.

It is for the clutch pedal push rod and seal. On cars with automatic trans. there is a small sheet metal cover with a seal on the back which covers it and is held in place with two screws.

This front section came off a 73 4 speed car. It is as-is from the factory.
Maybe some-one added the hole in question for running aftermarket gauges??
