H-Pipe Question

I installed an H-Pipe on my car and ever since I have a pinging noise coming from the exhaust upon deceleration. Is this common? Are X-pipes better?

Technically a X-pipe would be a better flow. I have a H-pipe which was a big improvement over straight. I have no idea how either a X or H pipe could cause a pinging sound on deceleration other than your engine slight twisting in opposite direction to slightly cause flex in the pipes. Do you hear the sound once or continually as you decelerate?

Basically when ever I rev the motor over say 1500 rpm and let off, it makes what sounds like a pinging noise. I adjusted the valves(3 times) checked the timing and finally gave up and brought it to a local mechanic because it was driving me crazy. He told me it was the H-Pipe making the noise.

Do you have a manual? I get the same pinging sound once in a while. I switched from an H-pipe to an X-pipe. Made no difference with the pinging. If it is not your timing, it could very well be the grade of fuel you are using. Are you using 87 or 93? Gradually change the grade of fuel and see if there is an improvement. Whats your compression?

Yes, it's a manual transmission. 10.1 compression. I only use 93 octane.

Rob, sounds like either the h-pipe isnt sealing right, or the exhaust is just popping and pinging.

My 65 GMC shortbed with a 4spd and flowmasters did that when I let off the throttle.

Rob, what kind of mufflers are you running? Newer flowmasters are sh!tty. They sounded like someone was banging a cow bell when I got on them.

IMHO, their only good mufflers are the 1 chambers.

I have an h-pipe and dont have any pinging. I would try checking anything related to your fuel. Everytime guys talk about pinging it seems to be traced back to timing, bad fuel, cheap fuel, not enough octane etc.
