Ignition lock cylinder, removal?

I’m not sure if this is the right forum to place this question in but it’s at least a part of the electrical system. I am going to change the ignition lock cylinder to a new and I wounder how to remove the old one from it’s housing, any tips and tricks?

what year car. you either have to tap thru a thin layer of metal with a flat head screw driver or it is held in place with a screw.

Your ignition key is NOT needed to pull the cylinder.

Before this ^^
1. Remove steering wheel
2. Remove turn signal cam [2 layer white plastic circle]

I was going to make a video. I just did mine as well.
Just an FYI too.......

The black replacement ignition locks DO NOT work.
I got one from Rock Auto, Autozone, Car Quest, Oreillys
All of them have the push tab 180 degrees opposite side.

Chrome lignition locks are the only ones that work
unless someone else knows which black one works

Here's a picture of where the lock tab is located. I had to make a hole to be able to get to the lock tab with the screwdriver. When you are pressing the tab you can just pull the ignition lock cylinder out of it's housing.

Magnus,

Correct, however your picture is about 35 degree's tilted to the right. Might be confusing for someone trying to find it.
I stole thsi pic from another thread and just made it real simple. I just did this myself. It's daunting until you
actually pull it apart and realize how simple it really is.

1972 Camaro ingintion cylinder will not return to "Lock" position

Guys,

I have a similar problem. The ingintion cylinder will not return to the "Lock" position. A locksmith replaced the ingintion cylinder and then it still won't
go back to lock. He told me that I should replace the electirical switch on the column by lowering the column and taking off the 2 bolts. I did so and the switch will still not retunr to the lock position. Do you think he installed it
one tooth off or ?

What in the world? So this hole is not there from the factory? What kind of GM craziness is this? We just went thru this on Saturday. We stopped for gas on our way to a car show. My son went to fire up the Camaro and the ignition lock just spun. It was like the chrome ring came unattached from the rest of the housing. We dropped the column and fired up the car from the ignition switch. Spent about two hours trying to get the lock cylinder out and we just couldn't figure it out so we gave up.

Thanks a bunch for the information. I am going to give it another try tonight. I just can't believe GM did this. Just making things harder for us...lol.

subscribe! I get to do this tonight. I tried for two hours last night and can not see the clip. I may need to break out the area Magnus shows? There is no spring clip behind the slag casting on Aceshigh's picture. I even rotated the cylinder from lock-start. I'm working on a 73.

Bowtie98607- Magnus shows the correct hole to break. Aceshigh is showing the back of the cylinder.

mrod15- If the cylinder isn't turning back to lock, there's a good chance the lock rod for the tranny is off adjusment. You need to spin the collar of the steering shaft to the park position.A professional locksmith would've never left that job incomplete.

Toecutter- If the chrome ring was spinning, all you needed to do was line the keyway up and enter the key, or rip the chrome ring off and enter the key to get home.

The replacement cylinder needs to be the retainer-type versus bolt-type for correct early Camaro's with original columns, black or chrome. Commonly pre-78 GM.
