How do I get them off ?

yep sometimes when the windhield gets put in some urethane gets stuck on them so you might have to pull on them a bit,

thats what it looks like a small "J" or "C" thats very tight I ripped the old headliner out

If it is pinch molding, it is pushed onto a metal flange (with little teeth) that is screwed into the roof. If it has been on there for a long time, it is probably stuck or glued on pretty good with headliner glue. It may have some of the window seal on it as well. Just get one side started and pull it toward the windshield. Once you get it started, it will get easier.
If that don't work and you can see the mounting screws since the headliner material is ripped out, unscrew the screws and take the metal flange out and separate them out of the car. Don't loose that metal flange, they are hard to find.
