Hows this sound....

Hey guys, made a trip to the Firebird tonight with the truck.. hows these times sound,, has a mild 355 and 4.10's with 2,500 stall or so... The 355 has S/r heads and a very mild cam... Good till 5,500rpms, remember, this is the first time at the drag strip with these gears and this motor..before the changes it ran a 18.5..

1st run i ran the right hand lane, spun til about 60' and spun half way through 2nd.. ran a 17.73 at 86 MPH...

2nd run it ran a 15.803 at 87MPH and shows the Honda boy whats up... HEHE.. Best run of the night, pulled a plug and it looks a tad lean but others tell me its about perfect..(checking plugs due to a new carb, Jet stage 2 q-jet)

3rd run i shifted a little early and got a 15.991 @ 86.96 mph, the other guy ran a 15.788 at 92.03, but i was ahead of him the whole way..

4th and final run i ran a 15.953 @ 85mph...

Im stoked.. I was not expecting 15's with this unmatched combo.. The new motor and the slicks i have will hopefully push this truck to 13's.. Just thought id let youguys know as im stoked and the trash talking started when i got my first ever 15 second time slip.. hehe.. Nate

Congrats Nate, but now that the needle is in your vein,, 15's won't satisfy for long.

Marv,

Santa visited early this year & gave Nate a nice foundation for the next engine.

I think you're right ...now that he's in the 15's, he may be hitting you up for the Herbert roller that's sitting on your shelf.

Nate,
Could you imagine the look on Honda boy's face if you would have left my truck alone & shown him what's up with a 4x4???

OK OK OK, the secret is out... Marv, im gonna need your help on this one since you know what your doing with 400's...

This is what i have so far..

400 Block, 2 bolt main, std bore..
400 crank, never been cut on...

And this is what doug still has for me

Dart Conquest heads..
Eagle H beam Rods 5.7's
Comp cam K kit XE274 ( a little small, but im hearing good things about it in streetable 400's.). Comp 294 Solid a better choice maybe??

I wanna get everything done to the block that i can afford,(deck, bore, line hone, paint the inside of the block for oil return, and whatever else i can get), but do you think i should spend the money on a good crank instead of putting Nice rods on a stock crank??? Dont plan on spinning her past 6,600 (For now anyways).. cause i still hafta drive this thing to work and back... Thanks marv, doug and everyone else who has helped me... Nate

Plan on getting rid of the heads and going to a better set. Trust me it will cost you less in the long run to upgrade them as soon as possible.

Mouse, These are the dart conquest 215cc alluminum heads... I was told by marv they would work great on my 406... Ive just about convinced myself to keep this thing streetable so im gonna keep the compression on the pump gas side (9.8:1 or so) and stick with the xe 274 cam.. But my question is, the springs that come with that cam kit are wayyyyy to small to fit snugly in the heads, how can i fix this problem?? Thanks.. nate

If Marv said they will work I would go with his opinion. Find out what springs will work with that cam and have them installed on your heads. You might have to have the heads machined for bigger springs. Plus buy springs, retainers and keepers.

Hey guys, i have a question, a little off topic but i need it answered, Everytime i run this thing up to 5,700rpms or so im getting a funky smell out of my exhaust, it smells like a barbicue (the smell of burning ash i guess).. and its making me wonder what the heck is going on, its not a smell like gas or anything, just smells like burning stones in a barbicue.... Im not hearing any detonation and the plugs look ok.. but its just making me wonder... Thanks..
