AJ, I was just giving budget options which a lot of us have to live with, many of us can't drop coin in a new set of heads and have to have the work done piece-meal as we can afford it.
Didn't mean to pee in your Cheerios...but since you're the expert, carry on.

Why do you have to keep addressing me? Why do you keep challenging me? Have I challenged you in any way? Have I said your opinion sucks and used Vortec heads aren't the way to go?

I'm giving my opinion on new Vortec heads. New, not used. Give your opinion on used ones. I'm not stopping you, just quit trying to compare my opinion of the cost effectiveness of new Vortecs to buying used ones and doing what needs to be done to them.

I didn't claim to be, nor have I ever claimed to be an expert. I'm just giving my advice, which is what was asked of us.

There's a point of diminishing returns and I think new Vortec heads have reached that point.

I wouldn't have gone with Vortecs had I not found a screaming deal. $75 for the pair, assembled, with valve covers and rocker arms, only 3 hours of run time. The guy I bought them from got them in a trade, and he was "a big block guy"m so they were junk to him. I'm happy with my vortecs, but I built my car for driving, not racing. It runs like a top and gets great mileage. ANYWAY, how is the rest of your car set up? Are you trying to build the most engine that you can, and then modify the car to suit? Because if you bolt a high RPM motor into a stock car, with a stock torque converter, exhaust manifolds and a 2.71 rear axle, it's going to be bad. How do you feel about superchargers? That's a better option for some people

Mine, too, if I came off harsh, but I'm in the middle of getting a new job and I'm a bit on edge. Sorry if I came off snappy. Reading back, I did, and I apologize. Good news is, I got the job so I shouldn't be so edgy.

IF I were to do Vortecs, they'd have to be dirt cheap used ones, such as the deal found by arick793.

E.G., before I got my car I'd bought a used pair on eBay and paid ~$125 shipped. They need a valve job and need to be resurfaced. I also started to port the exhaust runners (as I've heard the intake runners are nearly perfect for the amount of flow, unless you're an expert, which I'm not).

After 3 of the ports were done (about 2 months progress LOL) I found another pair for ~$4,000 that came complete with an engine, a transmission and a whole car attached. Those were definitely worth the money.

Or find a guy who just upgraded to some AFR's, and see if he'll sell you his vortec top end
