Ok. So first I have to get it running, maybe needs an ignition module. Then I'll run it without the air cleaner for a bit and see what happens.

I've always had good luck with genuine AC Delco.
As far as your symptoms. If it was cutting out like someone turned off the key for a few seconds and then came back to life, sounds like that's ignition related. Check your pick-up coil wires that go to the module. Sometimes an old pick-up coil will have brittle wires and will lose connection depending on the position of the vacuum advance. Eventually they become a crank no start.
If your original symptom was more of a "running out of gas" type, maybe you have a fuel delivery problem. Or maybe a low float level.

i remember when i first put my current old school LT1 into my 72 camaro with a stock hood . with the edelbrock tarantula or TM1 intake and 1" tall spacer and holley 850dp there was no room for the air cleaner at all and the carbs choke horn was touching the underside of the hood . on the drive home from my friends place the motor wouldn't make any power and was just falling on it's face on any high rpm pulls
with the help of my friend we pulled the hood and then drove it around the block a couple times and it felt alot more responsive and easily went to 6800rpm with no issues

So how did the stock air cleaner fit? We're those snorkels restrictive? Was it the carb or the intake or both that allowed clearance? What about the L78? How did that fit?!

It was a combo of all above.
The factory intake was really low, the Filter housing was a drop down type.

Anyone know if something like this would work? I know, it's ugly.

Ok, so maybe someone can tell me what's going on now. I got it running after replacing the ignition module but now am having a new issue. I tried to drive it without the air cleaner to check to see if the high rpm hesitation issue was from air flow restriction. However, when I close the hood, the engine dies. If I open it in time before it fully shuts off, it picks back up.
If I put the air cleaner back on with the lid on, I can close the hood and it idles fine. I checked the manual choke and it's fully open. When I put my hand over the carb while it's running, it slows just barely as you would expect.
Why would closing the hood with a completely open carb cause it to apparently become air starved? If I put the air cleaner on without the lid, it's not as dramatic and sudden but it still happens. Is this why many air cleaners had snorkels?
I assume that getting that K and M filter lid should help but I find it bizarre that closing the hood with no air cleaner and thus no impedance to air flow would be worse than closing it with the lid on a too-restrictive air cleaner in place.
