Paint disposal
Before I just buy paint and primer and start spraying is there a special way I have to dispose of paint thinner and left overs?
I always painted at school so we had special jugs we would dump it into.
Thanks for any responses.

Not sure about Michigan laws, but the places I have worked at the past 12 years we had 55 gallon drums we poured waste in and a hazardous waste company came around once a month and charged us to dispose of it. I'm not sure where it went after it left our shop though.

In NY we have a S.T.O.P. program (Stop Throwing Away Pollutants). About once a month there's a place where you can bring paints, solvents, petroleum based materials, etc. Check with your local sanitation dept or Michigan state gov't DEQ web site.

I usually just leave the lids off and put them in the corner of the garden shed till the thinner evaporates and the paint dries up. Then just pitch it in the garbage can.

i just pour it all down in the sewer, it says "drains to bay" so I figure its ok.
(not really), you could probably call you local waste management company and they could tell you. I know there is a household hazardous waste number in my area we can call to find out where to dispose of stuff.
try this maybe? http://www.michigan.gov/deq/0,1607,7...5394--,00.html

Same thing here with household waste disposal place, and yearly they set up in different neighborhoods so you don't have to drive to them. The one thing I do is keep a can of clean and dirty laq thinner, the clean one has been used once or twice for cleaning guns, then once it gets pretty yucky it goes into the dirty can for a trip to the haz waste disposal sight. If your talking a small amount, a local body shop may let you dump it in their drum. Funny I was just talking to Cheryl the other day about my dad dumping the used motor oil in a hole behind the fire place (where we burned our trash), never thought anything of it in the 60's. Wonder if we should have disclosed that the property was a potential superfund sight when we sold??

Call your local municipality, most have a monthly drop off of hazardous waste like paint and what not.
