Question on seat foam

I978 Standard Interior

I need to recover the seats and would prefer cloth inserts like the custom interior has instead of the all vinyl. Does anyone know if the foam on the seat back and bottom are the same or did GM use a different foam for the custom interior?

Thanks,

Mark

Yes the foam for the custom interior is different. Custom seats are squared off at the top. Metal frames are all the same. Ck with f body warehouse he carries two qualities of seat bun. Get what you pay for IMO.

Thanks for a great suggestion. What type foam did you use and where did you get it? I am not averse to making new foam, 35 year old foam could probably use replacing but the price for preformed is out of control.

Dude,

The right foam is more than just molded, it has a pretty heavy gauge wire frame inside of it.....and since the foam has a wire frame inside of it, that's what makes most of the seats shape. Your seats are broken down due to the foam and the wasted shape of the frame inside of it. For me....the 35 year old foam HAD TO GO.

I ordered a complete set of covers from NPD, they were $375.00
I ordered 2 new foam buckets for the front..the right kind with the support wire frame INSIDE the foam for $200.00 each or $400.00 for the set. American Cushion Industries.

Hog ring pliers and hog ring cutters from NPD, about $40.00.

Re-used the back seat foam.

So my costs were like total $800.00 Done like new, not redone adding new foam to the 30 year old stuff...yuck.

Now,,,,,

The cheapest I got quoted from a shop to do the job was $1400.00 with the new OE wire frame foam that I wanted...$1200 to do it with adding foam and fixing bolster sides which I didn't want.

My old broken down 35 year old foam.

New foam I used a spray bottle with soapy water to spray the foam and pull the covers on. Worked better than a plastic bag?? Fixed some support wire in the frame

I agree with Kenny use the ACI foam. Trying to reuse the old stuff is just putting good money into bad. Do it once, do it right.
