Temperature sending unit

I have a couple sending units laying about.
Do the gauge type need to have multiple connections?
I'm guessing the units with a single connection are for idiot lights only.

Single wire even for a sweep gague. It's a "resistance to ground" type system. Cars from the fuel injected era often have two- one for the dash gague (still single wire up through most of the 90s) and a second for the ECM (called a Coolant Temp Sneosr wich uses a 2-wire connection).

78 Malibu. Inherited with only 35K on the odo! Mild 383 with Weiand 142 blower on top. Mid 12s appears to be the best it's gonna do on street rubber. Runs so good I may never drive it again.
