What size spacers for Urethane Windshield Install?
I've read so many conflicting opinions doing a search on the site. I am going to Urethane my windshield and rear window in, what size blocks are used as spacers to get the glass right for the trim?

I put some thought into my placement here, it is technically a newer methodology of windshield installation. I suppose it could go in "camaro questions", but that would seem like I would get more butyl type responses. I'm sure I'm not so far off base in placing it here that nobody knows the answer.

I don't think there are spacers for the in and out adjustments, just the ones for the up and down. No blocks are used on the windshield up and down the windshield just sit on the rubber topped brackets that bolt to the cowl. On the back window put 3/8" blocks between the bottom of the channel and the glass to obtain the right up and down adjustment. If there where blocks for in and out my guess would be around 11/32" since the window kits are 3/8". That would allow for the compression of the window ribbon required to seal the glass.

I was reluctant to post any kind of answer so take this for what it's worth being second hand information. My Nova glass sat way low. I could stick a finger between the glass and the trim. A guy I worked with did auto glass for years and years told me the guy used too little urethane sealer. He called his buddy that still did glass work and they installed a new window and set the depth with the sealer itself. It's been three years now and no problems.

When the glass guy did my windshield he put the butyl "rope" on first, then the windshield, then used urethane in a tube to seal it off. I have not installed my trim yet, but it seems to sit out like it did before. Not sure if that answers the OP question or not.

I was afraid of this. I guess I'll just have to hope for the best.

Just make sure he runs a thick bead before its set in. KEVS79 has a good idea, use 3/8" butyl and then use urethane around it. You will have it set at the right height and have it urethane sealed. The best of both worlds.

I was really hoping to just use urethane to put it in. I know I've seen people on here talk about doing it. I've seen the spacer discussion come up for urethane installs. I swear bondo did it, but I can't find anything on it searching google with site:nastyz28.com and I just get a bunch of conflicting results, mostly conjecture. I'll keep at it, maybe I'll end up trying to dry fit some trim and mic it.

Steve, I like to use facts. Here is the info straight from the Fisher Body Service Manual regarding the windshield install spacer blocks, and the allowable distance between the glass itself and the pinch weld. Oh, and the factory used urethane sealer on the original install as well---as per the service manual.
Hope this helps!

I am no expert so I pay an expert to install glass. If it is clean, ready to go and the pinchweld is properly prepped, $50 per piece and they will stand behind the work. (leaks and breakage)
The method that I have watched the pros employ is that they have
a battery powered application gun
a special nozzle which creates an intentional ridge on top of the bead
they lay the urethane down in a big bead install the glass and immediately install the trim for the glass which sets everything at the exact right depth.
Once, I installed my own back glass, never put the trim on until a year after the urethane was cured and there was no hope of the trim ever fitting properly.
FWIW I have no hesitation doing paint or body work all the time for entertainment and am usually pretty satisfied with what I turn out. A really good paint job can be thousands if not tens of thousands of bucks and I could not afford that. BUT I will pay somebody with the tools, knowledge who will stand behind their install $100 to put glass in my vehicles!
