Speedhut GPS Dual Gauge & Quad Gauge Install

I really don't have a progress thread, so I thought I would post it here.

I decided to upgrade my stock gauges and dash bezel. I had already done some modding to the original bezel by removing the AC vents and had added a oil and water gauge. When I heard about Speedhut, and found out they can customize their gauges and had GPS, I was hooked.

First, I ordered the 4" GPS Dual Legacy Speed/Tach, 4" Quad Legacy with Volt/Oil/Fuel/Water and a quartz clock. I wanted it to be a clean and uncluttered look. Next, I ordered a custom cut aluminum bezel from Fabguy5000 on ebay. He is a member here and several others have ordered from him. The bezel was cut near perfect:

Then, I decided to purchase the Burlwood vinyl repro from REM automotive products:

I received the gauges and everything you need to hook it up, even for a novice like me at doing the electrical:

Here it is with the vinyl applied. Still had some pressing to do...

Started the wiring and almost done:

Installed and ready to go:

Night vision:

Works very well and the GPS is really nice. Seems to be very accurate.

awesome to hear. after looking at all the different gauges the speedhut GPS was at the top of my list. Glad to hear they work well. How responsive is the speedo? i saw the video on the site of them using it at the track but i would like to know how it works in the real world. For example, if you go into a tunnel does it lose the GPS signal? and if it does, does the speedo just go to 0?

It is as responsive as any speedometer I have ever had. Smooth. No more jumping around like the stock did at times. I just installed it this past weekend, so I cannot answer the tunnel question. I did drive it around quite a bit without a problem. We will see how it does when I do drive in a tunnel. If you do buy it, hook up the direct hot lead. Acquisition is within a few seconds.

If the tunnel is long enough, you'll lose the signal, but I bet the speedo will continue to read what the last GPS input was until it re-acquired the GPS signal exiting the tunnel. If you wire the speedo up to a constant voltage source (optional), then the Speedhut GPS speedo should acquire the signal within a couple of seconds of start-up. Only draws a couple of milli-amps, so that's how I'm wiring mine. By the way, the speedo updates the output at 5Hz, or five times a second, so no problem with rapid + / - acceleration.

Where did you end up mounting the gps receiver? Is it on top of the dash or underneath it?

Yes, on ebay. His seller ID is fabguy5000.

I ran the cord and receiver under the dash, and then near the firewall, over the steering column, up to small gap where the dash separates near the drivers side roof post. Tucked it there in between the windshield and dash. It is magnetized, and attached very strong to the dash. Hardly noticeable.

Aw man I wish you would have tried mounting the antenna under the dash. That is the one thing holding me back is I don't want the antenna showing. If I could get it attach under the dash even in the factory speaker location I'd be down.

I'm going with the Speedhut though, its some cool stuff!!

I need to do something to my 1980 as my dash tabs are broke and my gauges are all haywire. Would this work in the 1980 Camaro Z28? Also if you do not mind me asking, how much did everything cost you out the door for the setup?

Yes. I know. Always have torn it up, then put it right back together.

Sorry, did not. But, I can tell you that I made small cuts in the overlap of the vinyl on the backside so that it would lay smoothly. Also used some epoxy glue with small clamps on the corners to make sure it would not come loose.

That is the plan. I have not decided yet. Maybe a chrome "Chevrolet" or "Camaro" emblem.

Sure. It was about $600 for all three gauges and custom work. I did get the Dual and Quad on sale. I also bought three of the Classic Black rings because I was not sure if the Black or Chrome would look better with the Burlwood. Chrome won. It will be more expensive if you purchase the gauges separately. From heads up vision to dash vision, the gauges allow you to focus in one area quickly. I really like the speed/tach, because I can set the shift light and focus directly on speed and rpms. No reason why it should not work in the 80Z.
