1981 Z28 Front Grill
On a 81 Z the upper and lower grill, are they supposed to be body coler or black? My car was originally dark brown and the grill was brown as well. I have changed the coler to red. I have seen it done both ways but it seems like the majority are painted black.

Factory was body color for 81Z's. You can go either way it's now your car. Big debate will follow.

I agree with manic, people will argue, but all 81 Z's I have seen have the body color grill. My grill is red, like the car, and is factory.

Thanks I did paint mine red because I assumed it was supposed to be body coler. But I have seen so many that are black I was beggining think I had done it wrong.

Hey 81Z28355 - you're from Hemlock? I'm in Saginaw, I think I met you last summer out at the Watering Trough on 46 (I was the short guy with the blue '81 Z28 ). Your car was all red with a tan interior right?
Oh yeah and to answer the question, what manic and jrz28 said - '81 grilles are body color.

I believe the previous "arguments" over black vs. body color were as it applied to 1980Z's- not 1981Z's- i.e. leftover factory color scheme from '78/79Z's carried partway into the 1980 production year...

i still havent seen the definitive answer on this one. ive seen pics of unmolested 81s with a black grille and blue body. my 81 has original blue paint and black grille. back in the day i had 2 new z28s, both cars were black, but the grilles were matte black not the body color. the assembly manual says its body color tho....
